Unsung Suns drop huge loss on Spurs

For six weeks the Spurs rolled through the NBA. They won nine straight, then six more.

When they convincingly dumped Houston on Thursday night, turning the Compaq Center crowd against the home team, few would argue the Spurs were the league’s hottest team. Their record supported it. Only Portland and Toronto blemished perfection.

Funny what one game can do.

Specifically, a numbing 110-84 loss.

When Phoenix was finally done embarrassing them in front of 19,023 fans Saturday night at America West Arena, the Spurs had trouble pointing to one thing they did right.

“Overall, our last game against Houston was our best performance,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “This was our worst.”

The 26-point margin of defeat was the Spurs’ worst since Houston clubbed them 108-78 on Dec. 9, 1997. That loss left them at 10-10 before they rebounded to win 12 of their next 13 games.

For the time being, the Spurs (24- 11) would like to regain their footing by Monday, when Phoenix returns to the Alamodome.

“We just came in here and laid an egg,” said Avery Johnson, who showed his frustration with a fourth-quarter technical. "This loss is just sickening.

“I don’t know what they did. I just know we played awful. Just disgusting.”

The Suns (18-19) were missing starting center Luc Longley and forward Tom Gugliotta. It mattered little.

Pat Garrity, a fair-haired rookie out of Notre Dame, busted the Spurs for a career-high 25 points. Clifford Robinson added 22. Rex Chapman, who missed all nine of his shots Friday against Utah, hung up 18.

Jason Kidd, typically, was behind it all. He scored 15 points and dished out 14 assists. The Suns finished with a season-high 37 assists, one shy of the NBA’s best this season.

Kidd crippled the Spurs off the pick-and-roll. He penetrated and found the open man. When the Spurs trapped, he simply passed out of it.

As a result, Phoenix shot a season-high 55.3 percent (47 of 85) against one of the league’s top defensive teams.

“Most of my shots were open shots,” Garrity said. “I think that’s what happens when you’re a new guy, a rookie.”

The Spurs, meanwhile, couldn’t hit much of anything, making 31 of 82 shots (37.8 percent). David Robinson missed all but one of his nine shots and finished with four points and two rebounds in 24 minutes.

“I wasn’t making shots,” David Robinson said. “I wasn’t chasing shots down. I wasn’t blocking shots. I wasn’t doing much of anything.”

Tim Duncan led the Spurs with 21 points, but 18 came in the first half, 14 in the first quarter. He took only five shots after intermission.

“They came down on me early and they just didn’t give me the looks that I wanted to get,” Duncan said. "Their defensive scheme kind of changed throughout the game.

“They came quick. They didn’t come sometimes. It was just different. And I think they did a great job with it.”

The Spurs went more then four minutes without a point in the third quarter before Johnson temporarily stopped the bleeding with a 13-foot jumper with 6:49 left. It was the Spurs’ first field goal since David Robinson’s jumper 16 seconds into the quarter.

Phoenix, meanwhile, was in the midst of scoring nine straight points. A tie game at halftime became a 78-66 Suns lead heading into the final quarter.

Less than the three minutes into the fourth quarter, the game was all but over. The Suns led by 16 and continued to bury the Spurs behind Garrity and Chapman.

Garrity made 11 of 16 shots. Chapman finished with three of the Suns’ nine three-pointers.

“Sean and I were talking about how scary this is,” said Malik Rose, one of the few bright spots for the Spurs. “It’ frightening to see how good we looked against Houston and then see this.”

Even with a definitive size advantage, the Spurs only mustered a 42-42 tie on the boards. Danny Manning, a 6-foot-10 forward with countless knee operations, pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.

“We can’t shrug this off,” David Robinson said. “We can’t have games like this when we’re trying to chase Utah.”

Masked man: Spurs trainer Will Sevening customized a protective mask that made Will Perdue available to play in Saturday’s game, but Perdue did not leave the bench.

Malik Rose accidentally fractured Perdue’s nose in Thursday’s win at Houston. Before Saturday’s game, Perdue said the bleeding had stopped, but his nose was still sore.

Sevening altered the padding on a silver mask Perdue wore two seasons ago, when he fractured the foot orbit of his right eye.

Sevening altered the padding on a silver mask Perdue wore two seasons ago when he fractured the foot orbit of his right eye.

“Will never thought that ninth- grade wood shop would pay off,” Perdue said. “I’m back to looking like the Caped Avenger from ‘Cannonball Run.’”

Perdue said it takes awhile to get adjusted to playing with the mask.

“I have to get used to the compression on my face,” Perdue said. “It hurts your peripheral vision. Instead of looking out of the corner of eye, I have to turn my head.”

Rose, meanwhile, blamed Perdue for giving him a swollen forearm.

- Wizards contact Rivers: The Washington Wizards have contacted Doc Rivers about their head- coaching vacancy, an NBA source said.

Rivers, who serves as the Spurs’ broadcast analyst, did not want to comment on the vacancy.

The Wizards fired Bernie Bickerstaff Monday and appointed Jim Brovelli interim coach.

Washington general manager Wes Unseld has compiled a long list of candidates, including Philadelphia assistant Maurice Cheeks, Detroit assistant Gar Heard, former Boston star and assistant Dennis Johnson, former Dallas coach Jim Cleamons, former Toronto coach Darrell Walker and former Chicago coach Phil Jackson.

Unseld said Monday he wanted to find a permanent replacement soon, but reportedly has since decided he could wait until the off- season to make a hire.

Individual glory not for naught - Statistical leaders usually come from playoff teams

Here’s a little more grist for the mills grinding out the oddities of this lockout-shortened season.

- Allen Iverson is widening his lead over Shaquille O’Neal in the run for the scoring title. This is good news for the 76ers, who are in a struggle to nab an Eastern Conference playoff slot.

The lat time a player won the scoring title and failed to appear in the playoffs was during the 1984-85 season when Bernard King averaged 32.9 points for the Knicks.

- Sacramento’s Chris Webber is in a leap-and-grab fight for top rebounding honors with Houston’s Charles Barkley. History tends to favor Barkley unless the Kings surge back into the playoff picture.

It’s been 11 years since a player from a non-playoff team led the league in rebounding. The muscular and relentless Michael Cage ruled the boards during the 1987-88 season with 13.03 per game. Unfortunately for Cage, his sterling efforts were not enough for the Los Angeles Clippers, who won only 12 games.

Cage said he had been inspired to his aggressiveness by published reports that he was a wimp. The clippers, being themselves, immediately traded Cage to the Sonics and he enjoyed a trip to the 1989 playoffs while the Clippers remained home with 21 victories.

- The Heat’s Alonzo Mourning is putting an end to a three-year trend of NBA block leaders. He has a fairly comfortable lead over the Mavericks’ Shawn Bradley, 3.82 to 3.26 swats per game.

The Raptors’ Marcus Camby won the title last season with 3.65 per game, Bradley the year before with 3.40 and Denver’s Dikembe Mutombo the year before that with 4.49. Those three players’ teams saw no playoff action.

- The Suns’ Jason Kidd is trying to get the assists leader back on the playoff track. He’s engaged in a nip-and-tuck race with Washington’s Rod Strickland. Each is averaging more than 10 a game.

Strickland won the title last season, averaging 10.5 dishes, not enough assistance to get Washington into the playoffs.

The last time a player topped the assist list without earning playoff time was Washington’s Kevin Porter with 9.1 a game in 1980-81.

- It’s pretty difficult to swipe a league honor unless you’re on a playoff team, but New Jersey’s Kendall Gill is trying to accomplish the feat, staying ahead of Kidd in steals.

The last time a player led the league in steals and didn’t visit the playoffs was in 1986-87. That fellow was Alvin Robertson of the Spurs, who set the NBA record for steals with 3.67 per game the previous season.

Set to walk on Suns - Spurs hope to get back on track tonight

There are two kinds of people in this world: the eternal optimists and Mario Elie.

The optimists, for example, might say the Spurs have won 18 of their last 21 games. That Saturday night against Phoenix they only had nine turnovers. That for the first time this season they didn’t blow a fourth-quarter lead against the Suns.

Elie, on the other hand, with tell you the dirty truth. Even if most of it is more suited for “Dennis Miller Live” than your typical family newspaper.

“I don’t care who we play on Monday,” Elie said. "We played like (bleep). We had no mental toughness. (Bleep), we’ve got to go kick everybody’s (bleep) every night.

"I’m real (bleeped) off. We went out there and had no emotion. No nothing. This is the pivotal part of the season. We’ve got to go out there and hammer guys.

“Pat Garrity had 25 points and they have two of their starters out. Man, no emotion or nothing. That (bleeps) me off.”

Don’t bother to fill in the blanks. The score said enough. After Phoenix wrapped up its 110-84 whipping, none of the Spurs tried to sugarcoat the loss.

Avery Johnson summed up the game as “awful,” “sickening” and “disgusting.” Then he left the locker room. Malik Rose and Sean Elliott called the loss scary. David Robinson, who managed only four points and two rebounds, barely spoke above a whisper.

The Spurs don’t have long to dwell on what went wrong. The Suns visit the Alamodome tonight looking to complete the four-game season series with their third win.

“Because of what we did early in the season, every game is going to be important to us,” Robinson said. "We gave up all those opportunities early. We have to take every game seriously. This game is going to be twice as important.

“That’s one good thing about the NBA. We get to get out there and do it again.”

Naturally, the Spurs would like to avoid a complete repeat of Saturday. Phoenix’s 110 points were the most the Spurs have surrendered since Houston beat them 112-87 on Jan. 24, 1998. The 26-point loss was the Spurs’ worst since the Rockets claimed a 108-78 win on Dec. 9, 1997.

After holding the Rockets to 2-of-12 shooting behind the arc Thursday night, the Spurs entered the game second in the NBA in three-point defense (29.1 percent). Phoenix made 9 of its 14 three- pointers (64.3 percent).

The Suns were often left wide open. With starting forward Tom Gugliotta and center Luc Longley sidelined with hyperextended knees, Garrity and Cliff Robinson each made a pair of three- pointers and combined for 47 points. Rex Chapman drained three en route to a season-high 18 points.

The Spurs could do little to contain Jason Kidd - who had 14 of the Suns’ season-best 37 assists - or the Suns’ pick- and-roll. Johnson got lost on screens and the Spurs failed to rotate.

“We were definitely a different team,” Elliott said. "We were stagnant again.

“They just kept getting rhythm shots. It felt like we were scrambling all night. They got the ball and just got in a flow. If we get rhythm shots, we’ll make them, too.”

The Spurs need to make something. They made only 12 of 41 shots (29.3 percent) in the second half. Trailing 53-51 early in the third quarter, Phoenix pulled away with a 21-7 run over the next 7:45.

Elie didn’t take consolation in the fact that it was the Spurs’ first loss in seven games. With the playoffs quickly approaching, Elie said, the last thing the Spurs want is for Saturday’s game to start a trend.

Spurs shut down Suns - S.A. gains revenge for Saturday’s loss

Tim Duncan scored 26 points and Avery Johnson added 20 to lead the Spurs to a 94-77 victory Monday night at the Alamodome.

Mario Elie helped hold off the Suns, who handed the Spurs (25-11) their worst loss of the season Saturday, with seven crucial second-half points.

The Spurs held Phoenix, which shot a season-best 55.3 percent Saturday, to 35.4 percent (29 of 82) from the field. The Spurs shot 52.7 percent after shooting 37.8 percent Saturday.

Following a stagnant showing Saturday in which he totaled only four points and two rebounds, David Robinson finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds and led the Spurs defensively.

Like Saturday’s game, the Suns (18-20) played without starting forward Tom Gugliotta and center Luc Longley, both sidelined with hyperextended knees.

Clifford Robinson scored 25 points, but fouled out with 5:15 left. Sean Elliott helped hold Pat Garrity, who had a career-best 25 points Saturday, to four shots and seven points.

Jason Kidd had 22 points, but six of his nine assists came in the first quarter.

After trailing by 21, Phoenix scored the last nine points of the third quarter and cut the deficit to as few as eight.

Elie, who did not start the second half, kept the Spurs afloat. He wrestled away a jump ball at midcourt from Chris Morris, took it in for a dunk and sunk the free throw to complete the three-point play. Then he dropped in a couple of jumpers with his toe just over the three-point line.

Elie finally put away the Suns when he dove for a loose ball and, laying on his back, flipped a pass to Johnson for a layup and a 16-point lead with just over four minutes left.

Spurs’ Elie plays big doing the small stuff

The Suns gave the game ball to Mario Elie Monday night.

Don’t check the boxscore. You won’t find the whole story in his eight points and four rebounds, a single assist and a pair of steals.

The Suns didn’t need to check stats to know who delivered the few critical blows to allow the Spurs to shade a Suns’ rally and romp to a 94-77 victory at the Alamodome.

“The difference in the game was Mario, his hustle plays,” Coach Danny Ainge summed up. “We got back to within single digits and he just stole the momentum. He was all aggression.”

Elie stole a tip and turned it into his own slam dunk to halt a major Phoenix comeback that had whittled a 21-point lead down to 11 to start the fourth quarter.

He raged on throughout the final period, pumping his fists, mouthing off, stymying every Phoenix attempt to snatch back the comeback feeling.

“That play where he dove on the floor, grabbed the loose ball and, lying down, tossed it to the other end for an (Avery Johnson) layup was just an example of what he was doing,” said Jason Kidd. “He let the air out of us.”

“I can think of at least three things he did that changed the game around,” Ainge said.

Elie was there when the Spurs needed him but the boxscore will reveal a few other Phoenix problems that didn’t crop up during the Suns’ 110-84 shellacking of San Antonio Saturday at America West.

Like shooting. The Suns hit 35 percent of their shots. They hit 55.3 percent during the blitzing of the Spurs in Phoenix. Rex Chapman hit 2 of 11. Danny Manning 2 of 8. Pat Garrity got off only four shots and he scorched the Spurs with a career-high 25 points Saturday.

“They paid a little more attention to Pat,” deadpanned Ainge. “Rex hasn’t been himself all year. Both he and Danny were working hard out there but the shots weren’t going down.”

The Suns expected a jalapeno welcome at the dome.

“If you don’t come out strong after something like that . . .,” Chapman said of the Spurs’ reacting to the Saturday battering. “They played real well. We played hard, got back into it but we were just too far back. They have good personnel.”

Phoenix used the pick and roll to ruin San Antonio in Phoenix. The pick was there again but the rollers weren’t rocking.

“They went underneath the pick tonight but we were still getting a lot of open looks,” Kidd said. "We just couldn’t get the shots to fall. And anytime you beat a team bad like we did, you know they are going to be motivated.

While the Suns hoped for gold at the end of their rainbow shots, the Spurs drove pell mell to the hoop.

“Our team defense was terrible,” said center Joe Klein, who had his hands full of both David Robinson and Tim Duncan. “Our perimeter guys didn’t contain and when (Spurs) got into the lane, we didn’t help.”

Spurs bucked by - avericks S.A. too cold in fourth to avoid upset

Dallas held the Spurs without a basket for more than 51/2 minutes in the fourth quarter to rally for a 92-86 victory Tuesday night at Reunion Arena. The Mavericks’ win snapped a nine- game losing streak to the Spurs. With their second loss in three games, the Spurs (25-12) have slumped as they head into their toughest stretch of the season. They play their third straight game tonight against Minnesota then face Portland on Thursday and Houston on Sunday.

The Spurs’ only basket in the final 5:45 came on Sean Elliott’s meaningless jumper with a second left. Their only scoring during that stretch came from five free throws.

The Spurs made only 32 of 84 shots (38.1 percent) for the game. Dallas (12-25) shot 46.3 percent (37 of 80).

The Spurs stretched their advantage to 80-74 with 5:35 left before Dallas began its comeback. After Michael Finley dunked off the break, Chris Anstey hit an open 18- footer for the Mavericks for an 82- 81 lead, Dallas’ first since the second quarter.

After Elliott threw away a pass, Dirk Nowitzki hit a fallaway in the lane. Elliott then missed a baseline jumper and Anstey followed with a dunk for an 86-81 advantage with 1:54 left.

David Robinson and Steve Nash each hit a free throw, but the Spurs squandered another possession when Nash intercepted a pass from Mario Elie.

A pair of free throws from Tim Duncan made it 87-84. Finley missed a jumper, but Nowitzki grabbed the rebound over Elliott and made his second attempt from the line for a four-point lead with 14.8 seconds left.

Elliott then missed another jumper and Gary Trent hit a pair of free throws to close it out.

The first half was full of swings. The Spurs trailed by 12. Then led by 10. Then watched that dwindle to one. They settled for a 48-45 edge at intermission thanks to Duncan’s dunk with 1.1 seconds left.

Considering the way they started, the Spurs were fortunate to have that.

They dug themselves a 12-point hole midway through the first quarter after missing 10 of their first 13 shots and committing five turnovers.

Caught dozing off in Dallas - Spurs too cold in fourth to avoid upset

Dallas coach Don Nelson officially waved the white flag Tuesday morning.

The playoffs were out, he said. The future was in. With that, he announced rookie Dirk Nowitzki would make his first start since Feb. 26. Second-year forward Chris Anstey would get big minutes. The Mavericks would start playing for next year.

And how did the auditions go? Ask the Spurs. The same Spurs who had the Western Conference title in their sights.

The same Spurs who instead looked like they had nothing to play for. The same Spurs who limped out of Reunion Arena after Dallas rallied for a 92-86 victory in front of a surprised, yet thrilled crowd of 13,142.

Go back to Phoenix’s 110-84 win over the Spurs on Saturday night. The same adjectives - specifically, lifeless and lethargic - applied Tuesday. But instead of getting blown out, the Spurs waited until the final minutes to blow this one, failing to make a single bucket in the final 5:58 until Sean Elliott’s meaningless 20-footer with 2.1 seconds left.

“Overall, the only time we had five guys on the court that were together was when we had our bench on the court performing wisely and hard,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "That’s just not right. Everybody that came off the bench did a great job for us. They had a lot of energy. They executed well and they also laid their hearts out on the floor every minute they were on the court.

“We need to get five starters who will do that every minute of every game. Then we’ll be a hell of a team. If not, we’ll continue to have this crap.”

Dallas outrebounded (50-44), outshot (46.3 percent to 38.1) and simply outhustled the Spurs. While the Mavericks placed four starters in double figures - led by Michael Finley’s 25 points - David Robinson and Tim Duncan accounted for half of the Spurs’ total.

Elliott, in foul trouble during part of the game, made only 2 of 12 shots for six points and failed to grab a single rebound. Three of his misses came in the final 4:30 during Dallas’ rally.

“I didn’t do anything,” Elliott said. “I shouldn’t have even been out there.”

The Mavericks’ win was their first over the Spurs since Nov. 26, 1996, a stretch of nine games. The Spurs (25-12), who fell four games behind Portland for the Western Conference’s No. 1 seed, could have picked a better time to slump. They play their third straight game tonight against Minnesota then face Portland on Thursday and Houston on Sunday.

“We just have to make sure we come out with the same intensity,” said Avery Johnson, who had five assists, but was held scoreless. “Everybody has to fulfill their role every night.”

The Spurs led 80-74 after Robinson’s free throw with 5:35 left. Until Elliott’s jumper, their only scoring came from four more trips to the line. They turned the ball over four times in the final 5:02.

After Finley dunked off the break, Anstey hit an open 18-footer for the Mavericks for an 82-81 lead, the Mavericks first since the second quarter.

A pair of free throws from Duncan made it 87-84 40.4 seconds left. Finley missed a jumper, but Nowitzki grabbed the rebound - his career-high 13th - -over Elliott and made his second attempt from the line for a four-point lead with 14.8 seconds left.

Elliott then missed another jumper, and Gary Trent hit a pair of free throws to close out the game.

“We didn’t go get the ball,” Robinson said. “When you can’t shoot the ball, you’ve got to get the rebound. There’s no excuses. We were right in the position we wanted to be going into the fourth quarter, and we just let it go.”

Considering the way they started, the Spurs were fortunate to have any lead. They dug themselves a 12-point hole midway through the first quarter after missing 10 of their first 13 shots and committing five turnovers. Elliott picked up two fouls less than three minutes into the game. Robinson picked up two of his own less than two minutes later.

After Popovich had removed all of his starters except for Duncan, Antonio Daniels sparked the bench-led comeback, matching his season-high 13 points in 14 first-half minutes.

Wolves just sheepish - Minus Garnett, Minnesota is an easy victim for Spurs

NBA Entertainment saw Wednesday as a preview of the 1999 Japan Games. Minnesota and the Spurs. A cavernous dome. Tokyo sent a camera crew. Just no sushi.

Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders preferred not to look that far ahead. Instead of November, he forecast mid-May and the first round of playoffs.

“If the season ended today, we would play them,” Saunders said before the game. “Ideally, you would like to set the tone. Play and see what happens.”

After witnessing the Spurs rout Minnesota 95-79 at the Alamodome, Saunders now knows this: Ideally, it would be nice to have Kevin Garnett and Terrell Brandon for the playoffs.

Missing their starting All-Star forward and point guard, the Timberwolves showed up undermanned. After Tuesday’s embarrassing loss to the Dallas, the Spurs made sure to do more than just show up.

“We were very disappointed with our effort all the way around (Tuesday) night,” Jerome Kersey said. "That was a game we definitely should not have lost.

“Regardless of who’s playing you can never let up.”

Not that the Spurs didn’t mind the absence of the 6-foot-11 Garnett. With Garnett bed-ridden in Minneapolis with the flu, David Robinson and Tim Duncan found more room to move in the lane.

Robinson finished with 21 points and 15 boards. Duncan added 16 and 10. Minnesota’s starting frontline of Sam Mitchell, Joe Smith and Dean Garrett finished a combined 9 of 30 for 23 points.

“We simply didn’t have enough bullets,” Saunders said. "They’re too long inside and we couldn’t throw enough weapons at them.

“They knew we had no inside game to match up with them tonight so they were able to put a lot of defensive pressure on our outside shooters.”

The Spurs (26-12) were able to rest all their starters in the fourth quarter. That was quite a different story from the previous night. The Mavericks rallied from a six-point deficit after holding the Spurs without a basket for almost the final six minutes of the game.

“We were feeling pretty crummy after (Tuesday),” Robinson said. “We knew we needed to pick up our defense a little better.”

Said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich: “We’re not good individual defenders. But we play good team defense.”

That translated into holding Minnesota to 37.5-percent shooting from the field. Bobby Jackson, who started in place of the injured Brandon, was the Timberwolves’ only consistent scorer, making all but one of his seven shots for a team-high 14 points.

“At first I thought I was the only one who shot bad,” Smith said, “but one look at the stat sheet told me it was a team thing.”

Ditto for the Spurs’ effort. Every player scored and logged at least five minutes. Led by Kersey, Antonio Daniels, Steve Kerr and Malik Rose, the Spurs built a 16-point lead in the second quarter.

Minnesota got as close as five in the third, but Robinson and Duncan were too much. On back-to- back possessions Kersey hooked up with each of the 7-footers for alley-oop dunks to give the Spurs a 63-49 lead with 4:27 left.

“A few years ago I would have dunked that myself,” said Kersey, who, in addition to his solid defense, six points and four assists, had a dunk of his own, his third of the season. "Reverse. Two-handed. Whatever. But that’s years ago. I figured I’d give the young guys a chance now.

“Besides the crowd goes crazier when Tim and David dunk.”

The 15,684 in attendance had plenty to cheer. Daniels contributed 10 points and five assists. Kerr made 4 of his 7 shots for nine points. And Rose added eight points and five boards.

“It was good to see those guys play,” Mario Elie said. “They’re the ones who always come early and work hard.”

The bench also earned Popovich’s praise after Tuesday’s loss. It was the starters who drew his wrath.

“I’ve been cussed out by every coach I’ve ever played for,” Elie said. "It was nothing new. He deserved to do it. We had too many mental mistakes.

“I know I had a couple of breakdowns. We just can’t have that.”

Certainly not in the next few games. The Spurs play Portland Friday, Houston Sunday and Utah Tuesday.

“First-place teams, last-place teams, we have to play like we are capable,” Daniels said. “We have to pull things together. We have to tie up some loose ends and get ready for the playoffs.”

And if the Spurs get stuck with the third seed? Minnesota likely will be waiting.

“I didn’t need to see Kevin Garnett,” Elie said. “I’ve already seen him enough. And I know he’s going to be here when it counts.”

Mar-buried? How not to go to the Wolves

Tim Duncan will sign another contract to stay in San Antonio. Those who know him, know this.

But the prediction is only that specific. He will sign - only for San Antonio. Duncan will wait to see if the arena issue is resolved, which is why no one expects him to re-up this summer when the Spurs are first allowed to make a deal with him. He will figure that, if his franchise is moving, he might as well see where it’s heading first.

That makes sense, which is why the Spurs again count their blessings. It wasn’t enough that they won another lottery for another Hall of Famer. They also found a second David Robinson, a seven-footer who was just as happy making a new life in South Texas, who wasn’t driven by boyhood dreams.

Ask the Minnesota Timberwolves. They’re still getting over the other side.

Only seven of the Timberwolves who played here on the opening weekend in February played Wednesday. One of the missing was Kevin Garnett, but he had a note from the doctor. It said: If you think the Spurs winning this one was a preview of playoffs to come, then you are the one with flu symptoms.

The more famous absentee was the one who caused that achy-all- over feeling. Stephon Marbury. He was in Denver for the evening, playing with the New Jersey Nets, having forced a trade-deadline deal.

Marbury never liked Minneapolis. A telling picture showed him on the balcony overlooking the frozen city from his high-rise, and early stories had him pining to be a Knick.

Duncan might not have embraced Siberia, either. Duncan admitted last year that, when lottery balls were spinning, he rooted against Boston. He likes the Texas heat.

But Marbury had reasons to warm to Minneapolis, beginning with the obvious. No one goes to the Jersey beach in January, either.

Mostly Marbury had Garnett, as well as a franchise built around their young power. By the time they were in their mid-20s, would this little-big combo be the league’s best? Marbury spurned it all to be near his home, which Duncan says he understands.

Still, if that’s understandable, then some recently published details aren’t. For example: Marbury couldn’t swallow being on the same team with Garnett and his $126 million deal. The Timberwolves couldn’t do anything about that, because of the new labor agreement, and now the Nets can’t either.

Marbury might have felt the same about San Antonio. Shaquille O’Neal, asked to choose between S.A. and L.A., would have headed west, too.

Duncan? He grew up a Lakers fan, but he grew out of wanting to be Magic Johnson. By all appearances, he’d just as soon be in South Texas as anywhere, which is why he spent most of last summer here. He likes being in a town where shorts constitute dining apparel.

He also likes this team. His buddies kept disappearing (Cory Alexander, Monty Williams), but a new one emerged in Antonio Daniels. Could Daniels also develop into Duncan’s Marbury?

The Spurs have not sold Duncan on that or anything else. They have yet to talk about the next contract. When they do, the labor agreement is on their side, since no team can pay Duncan more. Then there’s the agent factor: Not having to deal with David Falk, as Minnesota did with Marbury, is reason alone for the Spurs to celebrate.

A lot can change by next year. But if the Timberwolves compare notes and young stars, they see something they never had. Marbury had reasons to stay. The Spurs and San Antonio will have to give Duncan a reason to leave.

Mario’s muscle: How the Spurs flexed for May

The Spurs lifted weights, away from coaches and the media, just as they always do immediately after games. This time they smiled as they sweated. Had they ever had more reason this season to celebrate?

Then someone said it. “We didn’t have anybody last year who could hit that shot.”

They nodded, then lifted, the weight never feeling so light.

That’s the muscle of Mario Elie. And if he’s sometimes too strong - ask the Rockets about the other side - Elie gave the Spurs on Sunday precisely what they didn’t have against the Jazz in 1998.

Some fiber, specifically from 22 feet.

There were other storylines. From a comical Spurs deficit that had NBC looking for alternative programming. To another Sean Elliott handling of Scottie Pippen. To David Robinson, finding yet another open Spur.

Friday night Robinson kept his composure in the final seconds with an outlet pass to Tim Duncan. Sunday, with a Rocket running at him and the clock running down, he flipped a pass to the very teammate who had snarled at him earlier this season on an NBC pregame show, Elie, spotting up at the three-point line, ready to make another splash for NBC.

Big men kicked out to little men in last year’s series vs. Utah, too. Then the Spurs needed a nice discovery named Jaren Jackson to save them. He missed, and the Spurs went looking for better shooters. Dale Ellis? George McCloud? The Spurs kept coming back to a veteran living just 200 miles away.

The Spurs knew about the anger, how Elie had been insulted that the Rockets wouldn’t tell him about the trade gone bad with Toronto. Elie’s eternal grumping suddenly irritated, and everyone from Rudy Tomjanovich to Charles Barkley didn’t want him back.

Barkley said it last week in Sports Illustrated. Consumed with money, Elie decided “to make it miserable around here.”

To the Spurs, that wasn’t transferable baggage. So they signed him and welcomed the Elie who, by his nature, enjoys being miserable and making opponents feel the same.

He’s the un-Del Negro, rarely smooth but often diving on the floor. A lot of guys stroke prettier jumpers, but few shoot better when it counts. In 1995, Elie threw in the three-pointer that upset Phoenix in the playoffs. Olajuwon then called the shot “wicked,” and Elie responded by blowing his kiss of death to the Suns. Two days later, in the Alamodome, Elie threw in another trey in the final minutes to beat the Spurs in the first game of the conference finals.

He seems able to boil on command. Against his old Rockets this season, for example, Elie is now shooting 77.3 percent.

So Sunday was just the usual. Elie scored the Spurs’ last 10 points, but it was another wicked trey with one-tenth of a second on the clock. He fought off hugs from his teammates so he could gesture to his former franchise that, yes, it had given up on the wrong guy.

Olajuwon said later he knew what Elie was doing, but he didn’t want to see the kiss of death. Not from this side. “I’m sure this made his whole season,” said Olajuwon.

The Spurs hope not. Sunday gave the Spurs a sweep of the series with Houston and, in effect, a three-game lead for the third seed in the West. Now the Spurs see their least contentious path, through Minnesota and Portland and, most likely, Utah.

And if the Spurs are that lucky? Then there will be a night in Salt Lake City when everything comes down to one play, one shooter. One set of angry, emotional muscles.

Spurs get Elie-vated - Late three lifts S.A. to victory

Sean Elliott had seen it all before. Sunday afternoon. NBC on the sidelines. Another opponent short- circuiting the Alamodome’s JumboTron scoreboard.

“It was a repeat of Utah,” Elliott said. “They just came out and ran right through us.”

Said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, “It looked like we had just come in from Fiesta.”

As it turned out, the party had hardly begun. Down by 23? No problem. Mario Elie, frustrated enough to get ejected in the fourth quarter of the embarrassing 101-87 loss to the Jazz on Feb. 28, found Sunday’s soiree with Houston so lively he stuck around for the end.

Long enough to even turn out the lights.

Capping one of the franchise’s greatest comebacks - and one of the season’s most thrilling games - Elie buried a three-pointer with one-tenth of a second left to lift the Spurs to a 86-83 victory and give them a three-game sweep of the Rockets this season. Because the Spurs (28-12) own the tiebreaker, Houston (26-14) needs to make up three games to wrestle away the Western Conference’s No. 3 playoff seed.

After his shot fell through the net, Elie turned to Houston’s bench, blew a kiss and uttered a few words at his former teammates that - if lip readers were accurate - were not suitable for print. He then looked up at the bipartisan crowd of 24,077 and pounded his fist on his heart.

“We don’t care if he averages two points,” Avery Johnson said. “We haven’t had a guy who could hit three-pointers like that. We’ve had guys that can hit the two. But not three-pointers.”

The Spurs haven’t had many games like Sunday’s. Houston rolled out to a 36-13 lead with 10:56 left in the second quarter. Things got so bad that Rockets rookie point guard Bryce Drew drove for an uncontested layup at the first- quarter buzzer.

“We were just following them around,” Popovich said. “What were we losing by, 90?”

It only seemed that ugly. Johnson and his backup, Antonio Daniels, combined for nine missed shots and three turnovers. Asked what the Spurs talked about during their huddle, Johnson said: “AJ, stop losing the game.”

The bleeding ended almost that quick. After David Robinson planted Charles Barkley on the floor at midcourt, Elie knocked down a three. Elliott then took a bounce pass from Elie for a three-point play to bring the Spurs within four at the half. Less than four minutes into the third quarter, they led by four.

“It was playoff-type basketball,” Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. “We made a couple of mistakes when we had the lead and it really burned us.”

Elie stung the most. He scored the Spurs’ final 10 points in a nip- and-tuck finish that saw neither team lead by more than three for the final nine minutes.

After Drew buried a three-pointer for an 81-78 lead with 2:43 left, Elie tied the game with one of his own less than a minute later, pausing momentarily to blow his first kiss to the Rockets bench. He tied it again with 44.9 seconds left. After an inbounds play was drawn up during a timeout, Hakeem Olajuwon goal-tended Elie’s layup off the last of Tim Duncan’s eight assists.

Scottie Pippen, who has been outscored 35-10 by Elliott in their last two meetings, then had a three-pointer fall halfway through the rim before popping out. Robinson grabbed his team-high 14th rebound and the Spurs played for one final shot.

After Robinson set a pick for him near the free-throw line, Johnson drove into a double-team. He kicked the ball out to Robinson, who paused to consider an open 17- footer of his own, before swinging a pass to Elie on the right wing. Drew had moved over to Robinson, but no one rotated to Elie, leaving him wide open for the game-winner.

“I’ve seen that before,” Tomjanovich said.

“You always want to play well against your former mates,” said Elie, who spent the last five seasons with Houston before departing on less-than-happy terms. "I’m emotional guy. I express myself.

“The game was on NBC. And it doesn’t hurt to play good on national television.”

Perdue to have nose re-examined

Perdue to have nose re-examined Will Perdue will have his nose re- examined Wednesday to see if he needs surgery.

Perdue fractured his nose again Thursday when Portland forward Rasheed Wallace fouled him with an accidental blow the face late in the second quarter. It is a separate fracture than the one he suffered against Houston on April 8.

Perdue was wearing a facemask when Wallace hit him. He played three minutes Sunday and is not expected to miss more than a game if he needs surgery.

The Rockets just can’t figure it out

Houston center Hakeem Olajuwon had it just a little bit wrong.

“That’s supposed to be the kiss of death,” he said with a smile, referring to Mario Elie’s habit of blowing kisses at the Houston bench after three-pointers.

There was no question about it Sunday afternoon at the Alamodome.

Olajuwon had the next part exactly right. “This made his whole season,” he said, after Elie’s final long-distance dagger pushed the Spurs to an 86-83 victory to complete an improbable and wild comeback from a 23-point deficit.

It was an odd start to a bizarre game.

The Rockets high-fived, danced and laughed during the first 14- minutes, prancing to a 23-point lead. They swished from long distance, put balls down from awkward angles, scored on coast-to- coast runs, and hamstrung the San Antonio offense.

Rocket fans, seemingly half of the 24,077 in attendance, rocked. Strangely enough, Olajuwon hadn’t scored a point during the blitz. He missed layups, botched rambunctious dunks.

He didn’t nail a basket until midway through the second period, during the first stirrings of the San Antonio revolt.

“We allowed them to get back into the game too easily,” said Scottie Pippen. "We didn’t make them fight their way back. They scored 13 points in the first six minutes of the second quarter and only scored 13 the whole first quarter.

What looked like an embarrassing beating for the Spurs turned into an outright melee.

Neither team created a comfortable cushion after San Antonio took its first lead of the game early in the third period.

Coaches Rudy Tomjanovich and Gregg Popovich took turns turning beet-red in anger, jumping up and down, beefing at the refs.

Scottie Pippen drew the first chance to put the game on the Rockets’ win side of the ledger. He cooly aimed and fired a three- pointer over Sean Elliott with 24.9 seconds left and the game tied 83-83. It went down, swirled a bit, cruely popped back up and out.

“It’s a game of inches,” said Charles Barkley. “We all thought it was going in.”

“That meant it just wasn’t meant to be,” said Olajuwon.

“It just came out,” Pippen said. “Then we didn’t make a defensive stop, we let a guy stand out there and hit a wide-open three.”

Bryce Drew was guarding Elie in those final seconds but he left his man to scurry over to cover Robinson, also wide open for a 17- footer.

“I thought he would shoot, there were only seconds left. When he passed it over to Mario, my heart dropped,” Drew said.

Pippen applauded Drew’s rotation but said the defensive rotation should have continued to put a man on Elie.

“I feel very sad,” said Barkley, who had taken some verbal shots at Elie in a magazine article, saying he made the Rocket lockerroom miserable last year. “We met earlier this week and decided to play all the remaining games with playoff intensity. This was a good game today, it would have been great if we had won.”

Now the Rockets are stuck two games behind the Spurs in the run for playoff seeding and the Spurs own the tiebreaker.

Spurs looking to make statement S.A. takes on juggernaut Jazz squad in a key playoff tuneup

It’s a long shot, Mario Elie admitted. Probably even longer than long. The Spurs trail Utah for the Western Conference lead by four games with only 10 left.

“I think they’ve pretty much got it locked up,” Elie said.

Elie also believes it’s never too early to start planning for the future. The way he sees it, tonight’s game against the Jazz at the Delta Center may just be another regular-season tuneup before the two teams meet in the playoffs.

“That’s the team to beat if we want to go to the Finals,” Elie said. "Our goal this year is not to go to the first, second or third round. Our goal is to go to the Finals.

"I know Utah is going to be right there. And I think the way we’re playing right now we could be in the Western Conference Finals against them.

“… They beat our butt earlier in the year. Hopefully, we can return the favor.”

After Utah spanked them in a 101-87 loss Feb. 28 at the Alamodome, the Spurs dropped to 6-8. Since then, they have won 22 of 26 games and are coming off their two most satisfying victories of the season.

Tim Duncan’s two free throws with 3.7 seconds left Friday allowed the Spurs to hang on for an 81-80 win over Portland, which currently holds the Western Conference’s No. 2 seed. On Sunday, Elie’s three-pointer with one-tenth of a second left completed a comeback that saw the Spurs rally from 23 points down to beat Houston 86-83.

Elie made three other three- pointers and scored the Spurs’ final 10 points. His performance apparently earned him another bonus. By the time he showed up at Monday’s brief practice, the only players left were shooting free throws.

“It’s one of two things: Either you make four three-pointers or you make the last one, and you don’t have to come the next day,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said, laughing. "It’s just a rule.

“That’s all there is to this.”

Said Elie: “Pop said if you hit four threes, you get to sleep in. It’s all good.”

Elie shouldn’t need a wake-up call for tonight. Utah has won 11 straight, the league’s longest streak this season. The Jazz have only lost once all year at the Delta Center.

“We’ve had two good wins,” Elie said, “but this is the one I want.”

David Robinson, for one, has seen enough of Karl Malone and John Stockton and the pick-and- roll. Utah knocked the Spurs out of the second round of the playoffs last season in five games.

“They just execute so well,” Robinson said. "If you can make stops, you need to be able execute to get scores when it counts. If you look at the playoffs last year, if we had been able to get scores when it counted, we would have won.

“They’re so well-disciplined. We have to match that.”

Sunday against Houston, they did. After the Rockets took a 70-66 lead with 10:02 left, the Spurs never let Houston get ahead by more than one basket the rest of the way. The Spurs trailed by three with 45.5 seconds left after giving up a 14-point lead to Portland on Friday, but scored on their final two possessions.

“Especially, with what we’ve been through this year, we’ve had to grow up as a team,” Robinson said. "These two wins have showed us a little bit of progress. We’re definitely moving in the right direction.

“We’re playing well. I couldn’t feel better about our team going into a game.”

Spurs add a pinch of Salt - Duncan hits for 36 as S.A. finally gets back at Utah

Tim Duncan scored 36 points as the Spurs won for the first time in the Delta Center in 11 games, beating Utah 83-69 Tuesday night.

The Spurs, who had lost 11 of their last 13 to the Jazz, including the playoffs, completed a sweep of Portland, Houston and Utah. The Spurs (29-12) had already clinched a berth in the playoffs before the game, but moved within three games of the Western Conference lead.

Utah, which led the league in shooting (46.6 percent), made only 29 of 82 shots (35.4 percent).

After the Jazz cut the Spurs’ lead to six, Duncan converted a three- point play with 6:40 left, banking in an 18-footer over Greg Ostertag. He then turned an air ball by David Robinson into an easy putback.

Sean Elliott added a pull-up for two of his 11 points to stretch the Spurs’ lead to 74-63. Mario Elie helped put away the game when he poked away a loose ball to Avery Johnson for a fast-break layup.

Duncan scored 14 points in the third quarter as the Spurs burned Utah with the pick-and-roll.

Three times Johnson drove in and kicked it out to Duncan above the free-throw line. The Jazz, who used Ostertag and Todd Fuller on Duncan, let him have the shot. Duncan gladly took it. He made 5 of 6 attempts and all four of his free throws in the quarter.

The Spurs played the final 9:06 of the third without Robinson after he picked up his fourth foul on an up fake by John Stockton. Robinson started the final quarter, but quickly drew his fifth personal with 9:47 remaining.

The Spurs simply turned over things to Malik Rose. Rose, matched up with Karl Malone (23 points), had 11 boards and six points.

Dennis as selfish as they come

Dennis the Menace is gone from the NBA, at least for the moment.

There’s no telling if - or when - some team will get the Rodman itch and scratch it with a nice little contract, loaded down with the usual behavioral clauses.

I’d love to read the last couple of pacts he had with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers.

What was absolutely prohibited?

What was only cautioned against? Missing games? Skipping practices? Thumbing his nose at teammates? Squawking about being a scapegoat? Midnight runs?

Ol’ Dennis will be missed, or at least the Dennis that could have been.

That would be the Dennis who pranced down the floor after a rebound or a score. The Dennis who wouldn’t let his energy flag and relentlessly leaped for rebounds. The Dennis who energized an entire team. The Dennis who waved at and joked with fans and never failed to notice the kids.

But that Dennis wasn’t quite enough for Rodman.

He was able to get away with his rides into the nether world of the bizarre because teams haughtily insisted that his private life was no concern of theirs.

He stretched his contractual leash to the limit, whining about his need to be Dennis, a fix that superseded any team needs.

How did he get away with it for so long?

Talent, of course. It undermined any effort to bring him within smelling distance of rules and regulations.

I still remember former Spurs coach Bob Hill looking the media in the eye and saying, “I never had a problem with Dennis, you guys did.”

Say what?

Gregg Popovich, then only the Spurs’ general manager, used to shake his head over how the media fed on Rodman’s antics. He liked to imply that the media should have just concentrated on the play on the floor, whether the starting power forward and league rebounding champ was there or not.

Sure.

Why should the media issue flash bulletins over why Popovich suspended Rodman? Why keep track of the almost countless late arrivals or outright disregard for practices?

In other words, why embarrass the organization that put up with it in order to win a few games and maybe make a run for a title? The fact that Rodman finally helped destroy the team’s chances to knock off Houston in the 1995 conference finals may have been a just dessert.

Same goes for the high and mighty Chicago Bulls.

Phil Jackson with his Zen, Michael Jordan with his impeccable credentials as an on- court warrior, both embraced Rodman’s talent and abided the off-court antics and the shirking of team responsibilities.

The Bulls, too, shook their collective heads over the media’s attention to Rodman.

Players on all the other teams delighted in reading about the ventures in wrestling, the sporadic trips to Las Vegas, the I-Gotta-Be- Me declarations and the cross- dressing. They all hoped the dyed- in-the-head Rodman would lead the Bulls to slaughter.

Players on a Rodman team pretended the shenanigans belonged only in the Enquirer or as a footnote on the transactions page.

Players feigned wonder over the fans’ attraction to Rodman. They figured something was wrong with the American public.

Nevertheless, they kept him on their teams. He meant playoff success, more money, more glory for all.

The Lakers did the same.

They brought in the nut case over the objections of vice president Jerry West and welcomed Rodman as the answer to their problems at power forward.

They, too, said the media and fans should ignore the troubles and just let the team play ball. They still won’t come out and denounce him.

Why not?

Rodman is the antithesis of a team player, mocking and abstaining from team ethics. But players would excuse his absences. Allow him to sit and pout at courtside. Permit him to leave huddles and then fill him in on the strategic details.

Why?

Who knows? Maybe he became the players’ alter ego, the Mr. Hyde to their Dr. Jekyll’s subservience to rules. They knew they couldn’t all act like that, even those with superior and/or equally needed talents. The team would simply dissolve.

Maybe the players figured Rodman lacked the common sense of a team philosophy and figured they could overcome it with their own.

They were wrong. Only Jordan’s all-but-superhuman efforts and iron personality could overcome Rodman’s deficiencies. And he probably should have seen the inappropriateness of it all and cast Rodman adrift.

Rodman is out now. He’ll try to get back. Later this season or next year.

He’ll know that his fame depends on the media’s insistent eye, and that eye will slowly close when the daily stories disappear.

Big wins ease tensions for Spurs

Avery Johnson will only say there have been happier moments in franchise history.

After self-destructing in the fourth quarter of a 92-86 loss to Dallas on April 13, the Spurs retreated to their Reunion Arena locker room. Team Harmony, they weren’t.

When the doors opened, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich ripped a few of his starters. Sean Elliott ripped himself. Mario Elie, well, Mario Elie was best left alone.

“I almost had to break up a couple of fights,” Malik Rose said. He was kidding. Maybe.

“It was just ridiculous,” David Robinson said. "Pop was going off and everybody was just frustrated and mad. But that’s a good sign.

“This team, more than any other team I’ve been on, just absolutely hates losing. We almost hate each other when we lose. It was awful. That’s made us better.”

If Dallas provided the wake-up call, the Spurs were at least wise enough to answer. Since then, they have ripped off four straight wins, the last three coming against Portland, Houston and Utah.

Group therapy has been postponed. And when the Mavericks visit the Alamodome at 7:30 tonight, the Spurs can move another step closer to nailing down the Western Conference’s No. 3 playoff seed.

“We’ve come a long way,” Elie said. “I think, behind the Jazz, we’re playing the best ball right now in the NBA. Not to take anything away from Portland, Indiana, Orlando, but I feel that.”

The numbers support Elie. After the Feb. 28 loss to Utah left them 6-8, the Spurs have won 23 of 27 games. No team, not even the Jazz, has a better record during that same stretch.

The Spurs also have quieted criticism over the quality of their victories. After blowing a 14-point lead, they rallied in the final seconds to beat the Trail Blazers on Friday. Sunday, they overcame a 23-point deficit to edge the Rockets on Elie’s last-second three-pointer. And Tuesday, they led from the opening minutes to hand Utah its second loss of the season at the Delta Center.

The Los Angeles Lakers are the only West team the Spurs have not beaten this season, and they visit the Alamodome on Saturday.

“That’s everybody’s take on us,” Johnson said. “We had a soft schedule in March. We didn’t play the Utahs. We beat Houston, but nobody, even some of our people, thought we had a chance against the Utah Jazz.”

Defense has given the Spurs better than a chance. Over the last four games, they have held opponents to a combined 37.7-percent shooting from the field.

Portland was limited to a season-low 24 field goals. Utah shot 35.4 percent, its lowest at home this season. Granted, both teams missed their share of open looks, but evidently they didn’t get enough.

“We had a good defensive plan, a great defensive plan,” said Sean Elliott, who has helped hold Scottie Pippen and Bryon Russell to a combined 14 points over the last two games.

“We may have discovered how to play (the Jazz).”

Robinson, Rose and Tim Duncan combined for 32 rebounds and 11 blocks against Utah.

“That’s the key for us,” Popovich said. “When those three guys do that defensively and rebounding-wise, we’re a pretty damn good team.”

Even Elie would agree.

“I’m in a lot better mood,” he said. “Everybody thinks I’m the team grinch.”

Said Elliott: “That’s because you are.”

“I’m just a guy that wants to win,” Elie said. "I’ve been to the promised land. These guys ain’t been to the promised land. Once they get that feeling, they’re going to look at me like, ‘Mario, I want to get back.’

“I’ve won two championships. That’s the best feeling in the world. We’ve got the group here, I believe, that can do that.” Spurs notes: Will Perdue will undergo surgery Friday morning to repair his broken nose.

Perdue is available to play tonight against Dallas and will be listed as probable for Saturday’s game against the Lakers.

Perdue fractured his nose late in the second quarter of Friday’s win over Portland when Rasheed Wallace fouled him across the face.

Perdue, who suffered a separate fracture April 8 against Houston, was wearing a protective mask. But Wallace somehow slipped his hand through the eye hole.

“It was a 1-in-1,000 shot,” said Perdue.

No mercy for Mavericks - Spurs sparkle in avenging loss to - Dallas

It was Family Night at the Robinson house Wednesday. That meant TV was off-limits for a certain 7-footer.

But if David Robinson didn’t see the game, he saw the standings. Phoenix 91, Utah 82.

“I definitely keeping track of what’s going on,” Robinson said. “I think everybody in here is. It’s important to see what our position is going to be. We need to see what we have to do to get the best record.”

Best record?

The Spurs have reason to be thinking big. Thursday night’s 103- 76 rout of Dallas in front of 18,720 fans at the Alamodome served as further proof.

The Spurs won for the 24th time in their last 28 games to move within two games of Utah and the Western Conference lead. If Portland beats the Jazz tonight, the Spurs (30-12) can control their own fate.

Only four days ago, they trailed Utah by four games. Less than two months ago, they were staring up at Sacramento and Golden State.

“(The Jazz) had been playing so well,” said Robinson, who led the Spurs with 18 points. “It was nice to knock a chink in their armor.”

The Mavericks had no such luck Thursday. The Spurs held Dallas to 38-percent shooting (30 of 79) and converted 20 turnovers by the Mavericks into 21 points. By the time the fourth quarter rolled around, all of the Spurs’ starters were on the bench.

“We see the opportunity to do something special,” said Tim Duncan, who contributed 14 points and 10 boards in 33 minutes. “But all we can control is ourselves.”

The Spurs had enough motivation without the playoff chase. Dallas had handed them a rather unflattering 92-86 loss April 13. The Mavericks, who were playing their third straight game, arrived here fresh off wins over Phoenix and Houston.

“Avery wouldn’t let us forget that,” Malik Rose said. “He wouldn’t let us look past a stop sign. All he kept saying at the shootaround was, ‘Big game, big game.’”

Unlike a week ago when they fell behind by 12 points in the first quarter, the Spurs quickly got going Thursday. That meant going straight at the Mavericks’ frontline of Dirk Nowitzki, Gary Trent and Shawn Bradley.

Robinson made his first four shots and had 15 points by halftime. Early in the second half, he faked Chris Anstey at the free- throw line, drove and twisted under Nowitzki to throw in a reverse layup off the glass for a three-point play that gave the Spurs an 18- point lead.

Hubert Davis’ three-pointer brought the Mavericks within 59-51 with 6:38 left in the third quarter. Dallas’ rally, however, ended there. The Spurs outscored them 22-5 to close the quarter. Dallas made only one of nine shots and committed three turnovers during that stretch.

“There is no one they can’t beat right now,” Dallas coach Don Nelson said of the Spurs. “But they need to make the outside shot because their big guys will be double-teamed in the playoffs. They haven’t proven to me yet that they can do that consistently.”

The Spurs didn’t have to against Dallas. In the first quarter, 6-foot-9 Sean Elliott dunked over the 7-6 Bradley for two of his 12 points.

“I’ve had some of those back in the old days,” Elliott said. “Not as tall as Bradley, but some 7-footers. Like Dave.”

If Robinson or Duncan or Elliott weren’t scoring inside, Rose was. He followed up his sturdy performance against Karl Malone and the Jazz on Tuesday with 14 points and six boards.

“Malik continues to play with a heart the size of the Alamodome,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “He is an unbelievable energy player.”

The Spurs should be focused for Saturday. The Los Angeles Lakers, the only Western Conference team they have yet to beat, visit the Alamodome for an NBC-broadcasted game.

“The Lakers have faced a ton of adversity, and we’ve been playing a 100 times better,” Mario Elie said. “It should be interesting.”

So should the next two weeks. The Spurs face Portland twice and Utah once. The Jazz, Robinson said, should be hearing footsteps.

“They have to be,” Robinson said. “After the other night, they have to be.”
