The Athletic

As NBA draft nears, no consensus on who Spurs will use picks on
For the Spurs, the weeks leading up to the 2023 NBA draft lacked any semblance of drama. They, of course, would have drafted Victor Wembanyama a millisecond after the lottery machine delivered the franchise the No. 1 pick last May if league rules permitted it.
The run-up to the 2024 draft has been altogether different. Equipped with the fourth and eighth overall picks thanks to another dose of lottery luck, the Spurs have myriad options to choose from among a class that lacks a clear-cut hierarchy. A number of mock drafts have reflected that uncertainty as players rise and fall following the NBA combine, individual team workouts and, in one lottery prospect’s case, a serious knee injury.
Here’s a roundup of the latest mock drafts from seven prominent media outlets along with brief overviews of the prospects. The 2024 NBA Draft is scheduled for June 26-27 at Barclays Center in New York City and will be broadcast on ABC and ESPN.
The Athletic
No. 4: Stephon Castle, UConn, G/SF, 6-6, 19
In the 19-year-old Castle, the Spurs would have a sturdy 6-foot-6, 210-pound high-ceiling defender with a 6-9 wingspan who averaged 11.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game while shooting 54.4% from the field in 34 games as the Huskies captured their second straight national title.
One concern the Spurs might have concerning Castle is he shot just 26.7% from beyond the arc this season. But he averaged only 2.2 shots from deep and he shot well from distance in drills at the combine. – Tom Orsborn
No. 8: Nikola Topic, Crvena Zvezda (Serbia), G, 6-6, 18
Topic acquitted himself well playing against grown men in Europe and was named 2024 Adriatic League Top Prospect. He needs to refine his shot, but the big guard’s creative finishes and heady playmaking would help any team. Topic’s stock may have taken a slight hit earlier this month when his agent confirmed the Serbian guard suffered a partially torn ACL.

The Ringer
No. 4: Matas Buzelis, G League Ignite, F, 6-10, 19
A versatile and floor-stretching big who can exploit mismatches. The Chicago native averaged 11.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.3 blocks and 1.1 steals for the Ignite last season. And though Buzelis shot an unsightly 6-of-27 from deep, he was above 42% in his final two prep seasons.
No. 8: Nikola Topic, Crvena Zvezda (Serbia), G, 6-6, 18
SPURS DRAFT PROFILE: The case for Matas Buzelis
ESPN
No. 4: Reed Sheppard, Kentucky, PG/SG, 6-3, 20
Sheppard averaged 12.5 points on 53.6% shooting, 4.5 assists, 4.1 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.3 3-pointers as the Wildcats’ super sub. He connected on 3s at a beyond-elite 52.1% clip, sinking 75 of 144 in 33 games. He’s also a rabid, instinctual defender, a pest Gregg Popovich might quickly grow fond of.
The pressing question is whether Sheppard can thrive at point in the NBA. He comes with a nifty bag of moves and encouraging passing chops but needs to become more comfortable as a primary initiator. The presence of veteran point guard Tre Jones would provide both a safety net and mentorship as Sheppard grows into the role.
No. 8: Dalton Knecht, Tennessee, SG/SF, 6-6, 23 OR Devin Carter, Providence, G, 6-3, 22
A late bloomer, Knecht transformed into a potential top-10 pick during his only season at Tennessee. The Northern Colorado transfer embraced life as an SEC star, averaging 21.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.6 3s and taking the Volunteers to their first Elite Eight since 2010.
Knecht is a legitimate three-level scorer who would demand attention and create space for Wembanyama to operate. He does struggle to move laterally on defense and stick with quicker wings, though the willingness to body up is there. With Wemby inside and Jeremy Sochan as a perimeter pest, even a little bit of improvement from Knecht on that end would go a long way.
Bleacher Report
No. 4: Matas Buzelis, G League Ignite, F, 6-10, 19
No. 8: Devin Carter, Providence, G, 6-3, 22
Billed as a defensive specialist, the 6-foot-3 Carter emerged as an offensive threat in his junior season at Providence, making him a two-way talent who could push into lottery territory on draft night. Carter averaged 19.2 points for the Friars, leading the Big East in scoring on his way to being named that conference’s Player of the Year.
He also proved an outstanding rebounder for his size and position, grabbing 8.9 per game. Encouragingly, Carter never lost his penchant for playing pesky defense even as his offensive load increased. – Jeff McDonald

Sports Illustrated
No. 4: Ron Holland, G League Ignite, F, 6-7, 18
Initially a Texas commit, Duncanville star Ron Holland instead signed with the G League Ignite. He’s an off-the-chart athlete, explosive finisher and tenacious on-ball defender who averaged 18.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, 2.1 steals and 1.1 blocks.
Holland’s stiff jumper is what’s given some scouts pause. He hit just 11 of 46 3-pointers (23.9%) and 30 of 44 free throws (68.2%) in 15 games.
No. 8: Nikola Topic, Crvena Zvezda (Serbia), G, 6-6, 18

No. 4: Stephon Castle, UConn, G/SF, 6-6, 19
No. 8: Tidjane Salaun, Cholet (France), F, 6-9, 18
Salaun is a 6-9 wing with a 7-1 wingspan, active hands and strong slashing instincts. He was recently named FIBA Champions League’s Best Young Player after averaging 9.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.4 3s and 1.2 steals as an 18-year-old in France’s top pro league.
