Spurs draft prospect: The case for Providence guard Devin Carter
Providence guard Devin Carter goes to the basket during the second half of the team’s NCAA college basketball game against Creighton in the quarterfinals of the Big East Conference men’s tournament, Thursday, March 14, 2024, in New York.
Editor’s note: The Spurs enter the June 26 NBA draft armed with a pair of top 10 picks for the first time in team history, holding the No. 4 and No. 8 selections.
Had it not been for last year, when the Spurs famously nabbed Victor Wembanyama first overall, either of those picks would have marked the club’s highest draft slots since 1997.
This is the next in a series of profiles of prospects the Spurs might consider at those spots:
The Spurs’ search for a starting point guard of the future has been well-chronicled.
They opened last season with the ill-fated Jeremy Sochan experiment, shifted briefly to Malaki Branham when that failed, before finally surrendering and swinging back to incumbent starter Tre Jones to finish the campaign.
Though Jones brought some much-needed stability to the second half of the season, the Spurs’ hunt for a size-and-shooting upgrade at the position goes on.
Most of the point-guard prospect hype in this year’s draft has been focused on Connecticut’s Stephon Castle, Kentucky’s Rob Dillingham and Serbian teenager Nikola Topic.
Don’t sleep on Providence’s Devin Carter, however. His stock has been soaring among draft scouts since the end of the college season.
Billed as a defensive specialist, the 6-foot-3 Carter emerged as an offensive threat in his junior season at Providence, making him a two-way talent who could push into lottery territory on draft night.
Carter averaged 19.2 points for the Friars, leading the Big East in scoring on his way to being named that conference’s Player of the Year.
He also proved an outstanding rebounder for his size and position, grabbing 8.9 per game. Encouragingly, Carter never lost his penchant for playing pesky defense even as his offensive load increased.
Offensively, Carter provided adept at attacking the basket, using his speed and shiftiness to create space. He made 37.7% of his 3-point tries, a figure that doesn’t necessarily qualify Carter as a sharpshooter but does outshine all of the other point guards ahead of him on most analysts’ draft lists.
Carter’s stock has exploded since the May draft combine, where he showed himself to be an athletic marvel. He broke the combine record for three-quarter court sprint speed (2.87 seconds) and tied this year’s crop for first in the vertical jump with a max of 42 inches.
Though the Spurs would still prefer a guard with greater size than Carter possesses, his physical gifts could help make up for that perceived shortcoming.
With three years of college experience on his résumé — one at South Carolina and two at Providence — the 22-year-old Carter also comes more fully developed than one-and-dones like Castle and Dillingham.
Some draftniks have compared Carter favorably with former Spur-turned-Boston-star Derrick White, who began his career as a defense-first combo guard before finding his groove as an NBA difference-maker.
If the Spurs do not nab Castle at No. 4, and if they deem Dillingham’s smallish size a dealbreaker and find themselves unwilling to take a gamble on Topic’s injury history, it would not be surprising to see them roll the dice with Carter.
