Editor’s Note: The Spurs enter the June 26 NBA draft armed with a pair of top 10 picks for the first time in team history, holding the No. 4 and No. 8 selections. Had it not been for last year, when the Spurs famously nabbed Victor Wembanyama first overall, either of those picks would have marked the club’s highest draft slots since 1997. This is the next in a series of profiles of prospects the Spurs might consider at those spots:

Had the 2024 NBA draft been inexplicably held before the start of last season, Ron Holland might have been the consensus No. 1 pick.

The top prep prospect in the country coming out of Duncanville High in 2023, Holland eschewed a chance to play at the University of Texas to spend a gap year with the G League Ignite.

Though Holland’s one professional season did not go terribly, his draft stock nevertheless took a hit.

That could be good news for the Spurs, if they aim to add the promising wing scorer.

At only 18 years old, the uber-explosive Holland averaged 18.5 points for the Ignite — more than past high lottery picks Jalen Green and Scoot Henderson scored in their time with the G-League farm team.

Holland has good positional size at 6-foot-8 and plays hard on both ends of the floor. There were moments in his short time with the now-defunct Ignite in which he flashed the athletic skill that made him every scout’s darling at this time last summer.

What Holland did not do all that well is shoot, and that could be the bugaboo that keeps the shooting-hungry Spurs from taking a swing on the high-energy wing.

Role and fit will tell the tale for Holland at the NBA level, at least in the early going. He hasn’t proven to be much of shot creator as a No. 1 option, but with the Spurs that’s OK.

They already have a No. 1 option in the 7-foot-3 form of Victor Wembanyama.

It doesn’t take much to envision Holland developing into a scoring force by attacking the gaps in a defense that Wembanyama naturally creates. Add to that Holland’s size and length and willingness to mix it up on the other end, and he could blossom into a handy two-way player in short order.

It would probably be a stretch for the Spurs to take Holland with the No. 4 pick. It might still be a stretch to take him at No. 8. If he falls that far, however, the Spurs might be tempted to pull the trigger on this Texas born-and-bred prospect.
