SALT LAKE CITY — Spurs coach Mitch Johnson defended Luke Kornet after the backup center’s most recent subpar performance.

Through five games, Kornet is averaging 2.4 points on 36.4% shooting, 3.6 rebounds and 0.6 blocks in 14.6 minutes after he averaged 6.5 points on 64.3% shooting, 6.1 rebounds and 1.0 blocks in 21.0 minutes over 68 games last season.

Kornet had six rebounds but scored only 1 point on 0-of-2 shooting in 14 minutes of Wednesday night’s 117-111 overtime win at Utah. He finished with a team-worst minus-8 plus-minus rating.

“I think that part of that is the four guys that are out there with Luke need to be better,” Johnson said. “Sometimes the Luke thing gets so exacerbated because it’s Luke versus Victor (Wembanyama) at times, not saying you said that, but just in general. And if the same four guys are out there with both, then it’s not just a Luke thing. That means they got to be better as well.”

Sixth man Keldon Johnson, who often shares minutes with Kornet, agreed with the coach.

“It’s true,” the forward said. "Defense takes all five people and Vic is a tremendous, tremendous defender. Luke is a really, really good defender, but if we don’t help Luke out, he can’t do it by himself. And basketball’s a team sport. If we as a bench unit aren’t sharp in our shifts, we can’t expect Luke to just be on every time.

“Yeah, he’ll make good plays, he blocks shots, but I think it’s kind of unfair to say that it just all falls on Luke. I guess he can’t put the fire out every time. We got to continue to get better and continue to nail our defensive principles so that he can thrive in the role.”

Said Wembanyama, “When we go out there, we’re a system. No matter the lineup that’s playing, it’s a system.”

Some fans would like to see rookie center Tarris Reed Jr. receive more minutes, but Mitch Johnson appears to be committed to sticking with Kornet, who is in the second year of a three-year contract with a team option for 2028-29.

@LegoTomSkippy

@d1b2z3l4

@Candid-Recover6822

@VixxenFoxx

@Frequent_Onion7847

@Willing-Criticism-36

@Objective-Product361

@nokarmawhore

@oceanfloors1

@Johnkil4oy

@moco-7

@xbhaskarx

@Veggiedelite90

@Imaginary-Cycle-1977

@Sweg_Coyote

@ShadyBornSinner

@BubblyReception453

@Lumpy_Rice_2803

@alxandrafflatus

@acciopizza_

@Certified-Brick

@LegoTomSkippy

Kornet has been poor. But…

1. Mitch is not going to throw Kornet under the bus. Especially when he can say “everyone has to play better”
2. Mitch is kind of right. We lack shooting. Victor spaces the floor, which helps take the edge off. Luke doesn’t have that benefit.
3. Luke can’t clean up messes/weaknesses of other players anything like Victor. So their weaknesses expose his.

@d1b2z3l4

So how about you give Taris a chance to prove yourself wrong

@Candid-Recover6822

Luke hasnt been good but from what I’ve seen in the game thread, you guys def blame him for moves that are genuinely not his fault at times. The kornet hate is getting a bit out of hand imo. I would still like to see tarris get minutes

@VixxenFoxx

If there is ONE thing this sub has cultivated to an artistic level: its epic crash-outs and over reactions sprinkled liberally with a whole bottle of coaching or GMing from behind the keyboard.
But if you wait it out it all simmers down. Sometimes within the same game.

@Frequent_Onion7847

the more reason to go two bigs when wemby is out.

@Willing-Criticism-36

I agree it’s not all his fault but his hands in particular have been terrible. His ability to rebound and get loose balls in traffic are legitimately a problem and the part of his game that kept him functional on the offensive side last year was he was a pretty good lob threat. Right now he’s not giving any kind of production on offense at all.
So yes, it’s not all his fault, and being compared to Wembys production is unrealistic, but there are some pretty basic basketball things he’s not able to do right now.

@Objective-Product361

I agree with yall that mitch raise some serious questions about this team’s coaching. And I also agree that Kornet regressed so much. He can’t even grab a rebound. His drop coverage is ass, and is always slow with his reflexes.
But our perimeter guards letting opposing guards drive thinking they have wemby down there but it’s Kornet… is also not helping Luke.
I saw champagnie let someone blow by him and that caused a 2-on-1 and Kornet got cooked. Like, when you have Kornet as your C, please play more aggressive perimeter defense.

@nokarmawhore

it just looks like Luke has lost a step. He seems passive out there, last year he was a dawg going after rebounds and rolling hard to the rim for lobs from Harper.

@oceanfloors1

Yes, it’s the other guys fault he isn’t double hand grabbing boards, putting arms up at the rim, and failing simple put backs.
I like Luke and think he’s just in a slump, but some Reed minutes would take some of the heat off him.

@Johnkil4oy

@moco-7

So Reed will continue to warm the bench. Dear god.

@xbhaskarx

Mitch we have ways to measure these things

@Veggiedelite90

The other four need to take Luke minutes like they’re the most important minutes of the game. Gang rebound, super active on the perimeter on defense, execute on offense around his picks and get out and run when able. We have to play better in Wemby’s off minutes he can’t play 40 minutes a game.

@Imaginary-Cycle-1977

Luke is the bigger issue but I agree that his teammates aren’t doing him any favors
My bigger takeaway is why is Mitch saying stuff like “the Luke thing gets so exasperated.” I don’t think Luke’s been a big topic Mitch gets asked about a ton by the media so my other conclusion would be that Mitch is paying attention to social media talk and not gonna lie I don’t love that if that’s the case

@Sweg_Coyote

Waaa that s some spicy takes.
Some data pulled out of my AI ASS :

Likely rank	Teammate	Estimated overlap with Kornet
1	Keldon Johnson	**~35–45 min**
2	Julian Champagnie	**~30–40 min**
3	Dylan Harper	**~25–35 min**
4	Stephon Castle	**~20–30 min**
5	De’Aaron Fox	**~15–25 min**
6	Carter Bryant	**~10–20 min**

@ShadyBornSinner

Spurs must be doing pretty good overall if all we are complaining about is back up center minutes

@BubblyReception453

I think we forget that Luke was a 3rd string center on Boston. With Sweeny here, he was able to scheme Luke to the best of his ability. He also played above his skiis. He has bad hands and he is a big stiff. He is also 31 years old and lacks co-ordination. That’s the Luke problem, but the guys arpund him are an issue as well. The guys played harder on defense last year. This year they seem to have fallen into bad habits of just funneling everyone into Victor and hope he bails them out, and they try the same with Luke
Julian plays way off of everyone because he can has slow feet. He got away with it last year playing with Wemby in the starting lineup.
Keldon has awful defensive instincts and lateral movement.
Carter still makes constant goofy mistakes
Fox falls asleep off ball often and makes dumb frustration fouls
Barnes plays defense just like you would expect for someone his age
Nobody other than Tarris boxes out ever
Luke has a clear ceiling and the team has one with him as well. Until we get some more size at the 4, Luke will struggle. It’s really unfair to Victor that everytime he sits he comes back to a larger deficit or a smaller lead. Hopefully Tobias helps, but at some point you gotta realize that the guys around Luke aren’t the reason he is missing bunnies or can’t grab rebounds with 2 hands. They also aren’t the reason that he plays deep deep deep deep drop coverage. Luke should probly still be a 3rd string center no matter how much he over achieved last year.

@Lumpy_Rice_2803

It’s not Mitch’s fault, it’s the other coaches behind him too. They have to be better.

@alxandrafflatus

> It’s Luke vs Victor, at times
where, in what? checkers, chess, madden, nba2k? definitely not basketball
it’s Luke vs the potential of Reed who’s rotting on the bench

@acciopizza_

Rotting? You guys are wild. It’s only been a few games

@Certified-Brick

I just want Reed to play the majority of the minutes in one game to see how he performs against decent competition.
If it’s awful, I’ll hold my hands up and admit it. Then Mitch can just revert and keep doing what he’s been doing.
Like, we were up by like 30+ halfway into the 3rd quarter against the Kings. Reed should have been getting decent minutes here to test him and fully see how he looks, especially since we knew this was a B2B.
He’s just getting garbage time minutes and clearly has been outperforming them. It just feels like the last few games we have been lacking in rebounds, which he solves. Also, his big body screens are great for the guards, which Kornets has been lacking.
Hell, why not try double bigs when Wemby is out? Luke and Reed together wouldn’t mind testing this out to see how it performs.
