Mitch Johnson Spurs’ plan for Jayden Quaintance’s rookie season

San Antonio Spurs rookie Jayden Quaintance shakes hands with Spurs general manager Brian Wright during a news conference at Victory Capital Performance Center in San Antonio, Thursday, June 25, 2026.
The Spurs are in no hurry to get first-round pick Jayden Quaintance on the court after he underwent surgery in July to repair meniscus damage in his right knee, coach Mitch Johnson said Monday at media day.
“Jayden’s doing great, pleasure to be around, really thoughtful kid,” Johnson said. “The plan for him is to get it (his knee) right and take it slow and to make sure we get it right.”
Selected by the Spurs with the 20th overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, Quaintance came to the club with a history of knee issues.
The 19-year-old Cleveland native suffered a torn ACL as a freshman at Arizona State before transferring to Kentucky. The injury limited him to only four appearances last season.
The Spurs were aware of the looming meniscus procedure when they drafted the 6-foot-10, 255-pound big man.
“Our medical staff and Jayden and everybody who’s been a part of this have done a great job of making sure we keep his enthusiasm to a reasonable level,” Johnson said. “He’s a young man with a bright future and we got to make sure we nurture that and take care of it.”
The Spurs had no other injuries to report a day before the start of training camp. That’s in contrast to last season when DeAaron Fox and Dylan Harper were sidelined with hamstring and thumb injuries, respectively.
“Everybody’s in a good place,” Johnson said.
That includes Fox after an ankle injury hampered the two-time All-Star guard in the playoffs.
“I’m fine now, but it is what it is,” he said. “Injuries happen. I was able to play through (it). I wish I played better, but I didn’t. But I feel like I have a gift in being able to move on, and I’ve moved on from it. It’s a new season, it’s a new day.”
In July, Quaintance signed a four-year, $18.9 million rookie-scale deal with team options for years three and four.
The Spurs love his potential as a dominant rim protector after he earned Big 12 All-Defensive and All-Freshman honors at Arizona State.
Quaintance averaged 5.0 points and 5.0 rebounds while playing an average of 16.8 minutes across the four games last season. In his Wildcat debut against St. John’s, he scored 10 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked two shots, finishing plus-18 in 17 minutes of action Kentucky to an upset win.
As a freshman at Arizona State, Quaintance started all 24 games in which he played, averaging 9.4 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.6 blocks and 1.5 assists while shooting 52.5 percent from the field. He also set school freshman records for total blocked shots (63) and rebounds per game (7.9).
Castle embraces fellow Husky: Spurs guard Stephon Castle has been quick to bond with fellow Connecticut alumnus Tarris Reed Jr., selected 26th overall by the Spurs in the 2026 NBA Draft.
“Yeah, we definitely shared a couple of Hurley stories with each other,” Castle said, referring to Huskies coach Dan Hurley.
While Quaintance looks to be headed for a redshirt season, Reed could be in the mix for playing time.
“Tarris has been great through the open runs,” Castle said. “He’s rebounding the ball like crazy. He’s finishing. His footwork looks sharp, so you can tell he’s really been working. But, yeah, it’s great to have another Husky in the building to do some trash talking with me.”
Younger Donovan returns to club: The Spurs announced Monday that Billy Donovan III has returned to the organization after the hiring of his father, Hall of Famer Bill Donovan, in the offseason as an assistant coach.
Donovan III returns to the Spurs to work as part of the player development staff after serving on the coaching staff of the Austin Spurs during the 2018-19 season. He most recently spent the past two seasons as head coach of the G League’s Windy City Bulls from 2024-26 after serving as an assistant coach with the Chicago Bulls farm club during the 2023-24 season.
The Spurs also announced that Kenny Trevino has been promoted to an assistant coach/player development role after spending the past several seasons in the video department, including most recently as head video coordinator.
A native of Laredo, Trevino served as coach of the Summer League Spurs in 2024.
