What Tobias Harris had to say about his ‘perfect match’ with Spurs

Tobias Harris, the Spurs’ prize offseason acquisition in free agency, described his union with the defending Western Conference champions as a “perfect match” in the sense they both have just one goal in mind: winning a title.

“I know the organization is striving for that,” Harris said the Spurs’ media day Monday morning at the Victory Performance Center. "The team got very close to that last year in the (five-game) Finals (loss to the Knicks) and having a phenomenal year. And we fit in terms of what I bring to the table. But in terms of also what the team is striving for and what they want to get to for years to come.

“So, it’s in my opinion a perfect match and I’m looking forward to getting out and getting with the guys and playing and bringing it all together.”

The Spurs signed the 15-year veteran and former Detroit Pistons star to a two-year, $31 million deal to boost its frontcourt.

“When the opportunity came in the offseason, I obviously looked at the talent of the group, the trajectory of the team and just the willingness of wanting and striving to win a championship, and all those things align with me personally,” Harris said. "And I’ve known (Spurs general manager Brian) B Wright for a long time, worked with him in Orlando together.

“So when the opportunity was presented, it was one that I was really excited about.”

And the Spurs are excited to have him after he helped lead the the Pistons to the Eastern Conference’s top seed last season while averaging 13.3 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.

“His reputation proceeds himself as a human being and as a player,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “To be able to add something like that with his experience, his resume, who wanted to be here, he had multiple opportunities obviously (to go elsewhere). This wasn’t something where he needed a spot to go. How could you not be excited about that addition and someone that you feel like is going to be one of our type of guys in the locker room?”

Spurs All-Star guard De’Aaron Fox agreed.

“He’s been in this league for a long time. He’s averaged 20 points on teams. He’s been in different types of roles,” Fox said. “So I think just being able to add somebody like him is big for us both offensively and defensively. He’s able to guard multiple positions. He’s able to rebound. He can shoot the ball. You can give him a ball and he can go get a bucket if need be. So I think there are a lot of things that he’s able to bring to this team.”

While it’s uncertain whether he will start of come off the bench, Harris said he will embrace whether role the coaching staff has in mind for him.

“As I said, I only have one goal here and that’s (winning a title),” he said. “And whatever opportunity, role is presented is the one I’m going to make the best of.”
