I’ll reiterate what I said in a previous thread: I hate it. I can kind of see how it’s okay in the G League, and the Summer League, where the whole purpose of the games is just developing and evaluating talent, and free throw shooting is at the very bottom of the list of most important things you want to develop or evaluate. But for the NBA, no, no, never, I hate it, I can’t believe they’re even considering it. It would distort the way offense and defense is played, in exchange for an irrelevant few minutes of time.

And I’ll add that the league is facing a mini-crisis right now because teams were making roster plans based on the salary cap going up 10% per year and it’s actually going up considerably less. This season it went up 7% and the projection for next year is only 5%. This compounds pretty quickly, i.e., next season team’s will have about $13M less than expected, and two seasons from now it could be $20M less than expected. That’s one or two good role players you can no longer add to your roster to surround your max players. (What’s up, Jaylen.) The main driver of the decreased salary caps is local TV revenue being lower than projected. I don’t know how much money those cut-in ads during free throws generate, but those ads are mostly or always local ads, and anything that reduces the revenue (or even the viability) of local TV outlets is a bad thing.

If we’re looking at rule changes, my pet peeve is that offensive players are allowed to initiate contact and ram a shoulder into a defender to create space. Shaq made a living out of this.

This is particularly glaring on a fast break, where defenders have good position and the player with the ball rams into them.

At the very least these are no calls, but in fairness, many should be offensive fouls. But like in most sports leagues, the NBA wants more offense and scoring, so there you go.
