Hes a ready to go, NBA body who rebounds and does all the things you want a big man to do. Not fully switchable but he does have athleticism that he should be able to play in the playoffs. Has good touch around the basket and is a pretty good passer for a big.

He had such an odd career, because he was a starter at Michigan and looked like he had a lot of promise, only to transfer out to UConn (which normally isn’t a bad idea), ride the bench, and watch Michigan absolutely cook for two years with Dusty.
But in his second year at UConn, he got better at literally EVERY SINGLE thing being a starter again, and now he’s going into a situation where he doesn’t have to be THE guy and the coaching staff is just gonna be like “Hey, you’re a big, strong motherfucker. Go bruise people until they hurt and grab rebounds.” And they’ll put him in a position to succeed at what he’s best at. I’d say it all worked out for him.

Just from his college games I’d say this:
Defensively, he’s a strong, strong dude with good defensive mobility for his size. He is not a great rim protector - good length not the greatest vert. Decent jumper but not a pogo stick (and UConn played a very high hedge so he wasn’t a player to just stand near the rim).
Offensively, he played as a typical post player. I mean old school post play. He is actually very good in the post with good touch and good footwork but I doubt the NBA will afford him those touches. He was also a good screener and a good passer. The problem is, he is not, or at least did not show, any real ability as a shooter.
Not a comp but I guess he falls in the Mitchell Robinson, Andre Drummond, Jalen Duren type of big though probably not the same Max Vert.

Yes Quaintance is a gamble with a high upside, but Reed covers the short term need and allows the Spurs to work the medicals on Quaintance over time. Was discouraged by the JQ pick because we need size now, and he seems like a long bet to make that. The Reed pick addresses that, and subsequently makes me feel a bit better about Quaintance. I would’ve been bummed to leave this draft with a bunch of big question marks, but now, with someone who can possibly come play some minutes behind Kornet and eventually even supercede him, resting our hopes on JQ being healthy and developing offensive skill so he doesn’t get played off the floor (which I think is a real threat) feels like less of a waste of pick #20.

The Athletic gave the Spurs a B- for the Quaintance pick and a C- for the Reed pick. The lower rating on the Reed pick seemed to be more about the process than the player itself (i.e., Why draft 2 centers when playing Wemby with a center hasn’t worked up to this point?). The author wanted the Spurs to draft Lopez over Quaintance, which I pretty strongly disagree with since the Spurs just drafted Bryant, who is simply a better player and prospect than Lopez.

I give the first round a solid B. Adding Carr as a wing shooter at 20 then making the same trade for Reed would have been an A for me. I’ll pray every night that Quaintance proves me wrong. Quaintance will take the occasional jumper, which is interesting, but his form is rough.

I had thought about Reed in connection with the Spurs, because of the need for someone who is into doing the dirty work down low. I assumed we were out on him after the Quaintance pick.

The positive here is that he seems like a “can contribute right away” type. That’s not always the draft priority even for a contender, but what Reed does is something the Spurs need now – and needed earlier this month.
