Wemby still lives rent-free in Knicks fans’ heads after NBA Finals

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) makes a face after scoring a three-pointer during the second half of Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinals at Target Center in Minneapolis, Friday, May 8, 2026.
New York’s housing market must have finally crashed, because San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama seems to be living in Knicks fans’ heads rent-free.
According to a report from the New York Post, Knicks fans began chanting an obscene phrase two hours before the team’s ticker tape championship parade began at 10 a.m. Thursday morning: “(expletive) Wemby!”
That’s right — at a moment when Knicks fans should have been focused on celebrating a historic moment, they just couldn’t get Wembanyama out of their heads.
According to photos published in the report, many Knicks fans attended the parade with anti-Wemby signs in tow, while one in particular brought along a doll dressed as him to be tossed around by the thronging crowds.

Victor Wembanyama reacts to a chorus of boos from New York Knicks as he runs onto the court to warm up for Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden in New York, Monday, June 8, 2026.
Many New Yorkers were quick to villainize the Spurs’ star player after Game 3 of the Finals series when he pushed Knicks’ captain Jalen Brunson, apparently for holding his jersey and locking up his arm.
Officials did not assess the play as a flagrant foul, and history was made with Wembanyama at the helm. In the aftermath, he was cheekily labeled as New York’s most “wanted” for “crimes against the Knicks” — including snuffing the franchise’s hopes at a four-game Finals sweep.
Plenty of Knicks fans appeared to take their frustration out on Spurs fans in the Big Apple, as well as on the Spurs themselves. When asked if he’s being painted as a villain by Knicks fans, Wembanyama’s answer harkened back to New York’s old beef.
“I guess,” he said. “I’m nowhere near Trae Young-level, though.”
So although the Alamo City team didn’t take home the 2026 NBA championship title, it’s clear the Spurs continue to dominate as one of the Big Apple’s favorite topics of conversation.
