Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama denounces alleged fan violence

Fans fight outside of a watch party at Bryant Park for Game 3 of the NBA Finals between New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs on June 8, 2026 in New York City. The New York City Police Department and Secret Service cancelled an NBA Finals watch party near Madison Square Garden, with fans advised to arrive at least two hours before Monday’s game due to heightened security for U.S. President Donald Trump’s attendance.
NEW YORK — Spurs players, including star center Victor Wembanyama, denounced alleged violent behavior by apparent Knicks fans after Game 3 of the NBA Finals that included attacks against Spurs supporters not far from Madison Square Garden.
At least 21 people were arrested following the Spurs’ 115-111 victory Monday night, according to the New York Police Department, several media outlets reported.
Fans reportedly spilled out of a watch party in Bryant Park onto 42nd Street in midtown Manhattan, where some allegedly turned violent, ABC News reported. Social media videos showed some fans clashing with the police, while other clips captured what appeared to be Knicks fans attacking Spurs fans on the streets.
The reported hooligan-like behavior including ripping off the jerseys of Spurs fans. The NYPD said several people allegedly threw beer bottles at police while others jumped on top of cars and taxi cabs, ABC News reported.
Eight people were arrested on charges of assaulting police officers, criminal possession of a weapon, menacing, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration, the NYPD said.
Wembanyama said he was unaware of the attacks after a reporter asked him about the violence during media availability for the Spurs on Tuesday at Madison Square Garden.
“My thoughts, of course, is that we can’t forget it’s a game,” the 22-year-old Frenchman said. “We’re just playing a game out there. I am all for passion but to the respect of each other. It’s unacceptable.”
Spurs forward Julian Champagnie, a New York native who grew up in Brooklyn and played college ball at St. John’s in Queens, echoed Wembanyama’s comments.

San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama pauses to think about his answer to a question during a news conference at Madison Square Garden in New York, Tuesday, June 9, 2026, following the Spurs’ 115-111 win in Game 3 of the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks.
“I feel like for the fans it should never be that serious where you have to jump people, beat people up, follow people home, stuff like that,” Champagnie said. “It’s just a basketball game at the end of the day. Whether we win, they win, it doesn’t really matter. Everybody should be able to come and enjoy the game no matter who they’re (rooting) for.”
Spurs forwards Keldon Johnson and Carter Bryant also condemned the violence.
“As a human being, I don’t want to see anybody get hurt,” Johnson said. “It’s just the game of basketball. Obviously, we’re competing at a high level, competing for a championship, but we don’t want to sacrifice safety over a game we love. We go out there and compete every night, and we value safety. I feel that’s one through 15 on this side and one through 15 on that side.”
Said Bryant, “At the end of the day, we are all humans. (We need) to understand what our differences are, whether that’s who you support as your team or whatever the case may be in all aspects of life. We need to support each other. We need to be aware of what is going on. Life is so much bigger than the game of basketball.”
The Knicks also denounced the violence.
“The game is built off of respect and passion,” Karl-Anthony Towns said. “We want everyone to respect each other. We want everyone to enjoy basketball at its purest state. It’s the NBA Finals. There’s no better place to watch basketball. Leave the physicality to everyone on the court.”
