Who are the officials for Game 5 of the NBA Finals?

HOUSTON, TEXAS - MARCH 10: Referee Scott Foster #48 looks on prior to the game between the Houston Rockets and the Toronto Raptors at Toyota Center on March 10, 2026 in Houston, Texas.

Through a 32-year career that includes more Finals games than any other official selected for this year’s series, Scott Foster has often been referred to as “The Extender.”

When a team is trailing 3-1 or 3-0 in a playoff series, Foster often seems to draw the assignment, and some observers began to believe he was favoring the trailing teams to generate longer series.

But while the trend at some point had statistical merit, the Sporting News reported last month that Foster’s results in elimination games have evened out over the years.

So, as Foster draws the crew chief assignment for Game 5 of the NBA Finals with the Spurs trailing the Knicks 3-1 in the series, San Antonio fans shouldn’t expect anything unusual when the game tips at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Frost Bank Center.

Foster is the first official to earn a crew chief assignment for the second time in the series, set to call his 28th Finals game after also handling the duties during Game 1.

The Spurs’ Game 1 loss under Foster bucked a trend, as San Antonio had typically performed well under his watch in the playoffs, now sitting 21-11. The win moved the Knicks to 12-4 in the playoffs when Foster draws the assignment.

Another pattern that flipped in Game 1 — home teams entered the matchup 9-2 when Foster draws the assignment this postseason.

His 46.1 fouls called per game for this year’s playoffs ranks 10th out of 41 officials, per tracking site NBAstuffer, and he finished right at 46 foul calls in Game 1.

James Capers was Foster’s referee for Game 1, and he’ll assume the same role on the crew for Game 5.

In his 31st year, Capers will be calling his 19th Finals game. Like Foster, Capers went against a few statistical trends with the Knicks’ win in Game 1. The Spurs are now 16-13 (.552) in the playoffs with him on the call, while the Knicks are 4-8 (.333).

Tyler Ford will be the umpire for Game 5, as the 11th-year official calls the third Finals game of his career and the second this year after overseeing the Knicks’ 105-104 win in Game 2.
