The Spurs are no longer looking at the NBA Finals as a best-of-seven series.
Given their predicament, the Spurs view Saturday as the first of three one-game, single-elimination series.
“You’ve got to start off going 1-0,” guard Devin Vassell said. “You can’t look too far into the future because there’s nothing promised to us right now. Let’s just focus on trying to go 1-0.”
With a chance to clinch New York’s first NBA championship since 1973 on Saturday, Knicks coach Mike Brown wants his team to approach Game 5 with the same urgency.

In some ways, the facts of the series are more frustrating to the Spurs than the arithmetic.
The Spurs have seized a double-digit lead in each of the four games so far. They have led in all four fourth quarters. In total, they have led the series for more minutes than New York has.

“It’s the playoffs,” Wembanyama said. “There’s no time to regret things for too long.”
There is one player in the Spurs’ locker room who has seen a 3-1 deficit disappear in the NBA Finals.
Forward Harrison Barnes was a starter on the Golden State team that got ambushed by Cleveland in 2016.
His message to younger Spurs teammates has been consistent from the start of the Finals.
“We deserve to be here,” Barnes said. “We went through a gauntlet to get here. We don’t need to be anyone other than ourselves.”
That will have to be enough.
