Spurs vs. Knicks: Game 5 Keys to Victory

New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson (11) dribbles down the court during the fourth quarter of Game 4 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden in New York, Wednesday, June 10, 2026. The Knick defeated the Spurs 107-106, leading the series 3-1.
The Spurs are down to their last gasp in the NBA Finals, after a historic collapse in Game 4 at New York led to a 107-106 defeat in Game 4.
Down 3-1 in the series, the Spurs are back at home Saturday to attempt to keep their season alive. Here are the …
GAME 5 KEYS TO VICTORY
Always be closing
The Spurs have led each of the four games of the series in the fourth quarter. They have a 3-1 series deficit to show for it.
Game 4, obviously, represented the magnum opus of fourth-quarter collapses, with the Spurs leading by 20 with 9½ minutes to play.
The Knicks — who have a nasty habit of playing all the way to the final horn — chose not to say die, beating the Spurs to the finish line.
The second-youngest team in NBA Finals history has faced significant difficulty in closing games against a seasoned and cohesive New York squad that been through countless playoff battles together.
Chances are good Game 5 will come down to another fourth-quarter coin flip. The Spurs will need to grow up fast to meet that moment when it comes.

San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama (1) looks down toward the court during the fourth quarter of Game 4 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden in New York, Wednesday, June 10, 2026. The Knicks defeated the Spurs 107-106, leading the series 3-1.
Find Wemby’s happy medium
At some point in the series, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson and his staff came to the self-evident conclusion that the team is much better with Victor Wembanyama on the floor as the centerpiece of the action.
The Spurs leaned into that idea hard in Game 4, riding Wembanyama for 44 minutes in a game they led by as many as 29 in the first half. The All-Star center played all but 58 seconds of the second half.
That led to diminishing returns for the Spurs’ best player, who was clearly out of gas in the game’s most crucial moments.
After making 6 of 11 shots for 16 points in the first half Wednesday, Wembanyama went 3 of 14 in the second. He was notably a step slow on his defensive rotations and contests down the stretch, which hampered the Spurs’ ability to get stops.
The Spurs are asking everything from Wembanyama. In Game 5, Johnson will have to find a way to better conserve the Frenchman’s energy for the key spots of the contest.
An extra day off between Games 4 and 5 will help, but the Spurs need to be wary of running Wembanyama into the ground.
Focus only on the task at hand
It has become beyond clichéd by this point, but also true: The only way back from a 3-1 deficit in a playoff series is by winning one game at a time.
Fifteen teams in NBA postseason history have overcome a 3-1 hole, including Philadelphia and Detroit in this year’s Eastern Conference playoffs.
It has happened only once in the NBA Finals, with Cleveland coming back on Golden State to win the 2016 crown.
Each of those monumental rallies started with the same first step: Winning Game 5. It is the only thing that matters come Saturday night.
