这……” pic.twitter.com/n8rnWZ7bWQ

回顾这场比赛,我认为我本可以在这方面做得更好……” pic.twitter.com/fAvgcloQq9

San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox (4) misses a layup while being guarded by New York Knicks forward OG Anunoby (8) late in the fourth quarter of Game 4 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden in New York, Wednesday, June 10, 2026. The Knicks defeated the Spurs 107-106 to take a 3-1 series lead. Fox and Spurs coach Mitch Johnson say they aren’t paying any mind to outside noise stemming from questionable decisions during the Spurs’ second-half collapse in Game 4. Instead, they’re focused on moving on to Game 5.

Mitch Johnson has De’Aaron Fox’s back.

The Spurs coach defended the All-Star guard on Friday in the face of criticism from fans and the media for a questionable decision he made late in the team’s gut-wrenching 107-106 loss to the New York Knicks in Game 5 of the NBA Finals.

“People have their opinions. I don’t care,” Johnson said. “I care what the people that matter in our building and in our organization, in that locker room, that they know how I feel. I hear them, how they feel. De’Aaron Fox will have the basketball in his hands at the end of the game tomorrow, and I have the utmost confidence he’s going to deliver like he’s done countless times for us.”

With about 13 seconds left in Wednesday’s game and the Spurs ahead 106-105, Fox deflected a rebound down the court, giving him a chance to dribble the ball for a bit and force a foul.

But rather than take time off the clock before going to the free-throw line as 90% shooter, Fox instead went for a layup only to have the Knicks’ OG Anunoby block it. Fox then fouled Jose Alvarado with 5.7 seconds remaining, allowing the Knicks to inbound the ball coming out of a timeout. Anunoby tipped in Jalen Brunson’s missed 3-point attempt for the game-winner, a play New York coach Mike Brown called the “most iconic” in franchise history.

Fox explained after the game, which saw the Spurs blow a 29-point lead for the greatest collapse in Finals history, he went for the layup because he thought he would “be able to outrun them.”

His critics, however, considered it a monumental mental blunder that cost the Spurs a chance to even the series 2-2.

Fox, who finished Game 3 with 18 points, a team-high seven assists (four turnovers) and five rebounds, was asked Friday how he’s dealt with the criticism. In addition to his decision to go for the layup, he committed a turnover and missed a 19-foot jumper in the final two minutes.

“It’s not like people have my phone number and can call me,” he said, smiling. “I don’t watch those shows. It doesn’t matter. It is what it is. I can’t change it now. No one is just coming up and yelling in your face about it. We’re trying to move on from that, continue to learn from the mistakes we made, how we lost the lead, finished the game poorly. We think about the next game.”

Game 5 is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Frost Bank Center.

Fox isn’t the only member of the organization taking heat from fans and media.

Johnson has been criticized for several decisions, including playing Victor Wembanyama 44 minutes, a factor in his late-game fatigue; doubling Brunson on the Knicks’ final possession rather than putting a defender on Anunoby, who was free to crash the boards after inbounding the ball; and allowing the Spurs to take too many shots early in the shot clock in the second half rather than milking the clock after forging a 27-point halftime lead.

Johnson, 39, said he hasn’t paid attention to any of it.

Spurs coach Mitch Johson, on managing Victor Wembanyama’s minutes: “Looking back on it, I do believe that I have to make sure that I help him have the energy required to finish the game as strong as he needs to finish the game. “I can’t speak for everybody else. I don’t get into social media,” he said. “I think I’ve been fired 212 times and we’ve traded Fox 72 times. Unfortunately, we still have to show up and play tomorrow, and I’ve got to coach. The people that matter, we bond together, we stick together through the highs and lows.”

Johnson also said criticism “comes with the job” but that doesn’t mean he has to take it to heart.

“People have their opinions,” he said. “I don’t care.”

Still, the first-year head coach acknowledged he “could have done better” managing Wembanyama’s minutes.

“I do believe that I have to make sure that I help him have the energy required to finish the game as strong as he needs to finish the game,” Johnson said. “Looking back on the game, I think I could have done better in that regard.”

As for if there was anything that could have been done differently to prevent Anunoby’s tip-in, Johnson said, “Yeah, rebound.”
