米奇教练……” pic.twitter.com/jGqSLvWNUT

pic.twitter.com/XTuBBM3MrC

One word sums up the Spurs’ approach to a do-or-die Game 5: ‘Believe.’

San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama (1) runs down the court during the fourth quarter of Game 4 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden in New York, Wednesday, June 10, 2026. The Knick defeated the Spurs 107-106, leading the series 3-1.
NEW YORK — In the gloomy postmortem of the visitor’s locker room at Madison Square Garden late Wednesday night, the most noticeable sound was that of near silence.
The lonesome squeak of shower shoes shuffling across the floor. The drip, drip, drip of a faraway faucet. The occasional muttered exasperated expletive.
Thirty minutes after midnight, and not long after New York forward O.G. Anunoby had broken his team’s heart and possibly its spirit, Spurs forward Keldon Johnson visited the locker of each player still toweling off and softly offered each the same single word of sage instruction: “Believe.”
“You don’t get here without belief, without faith in each other, and that’s not going to change now,” Johnson said. “If it was easy, everybody would do it.”
Staring down a 3-1 hole in the NBA Finals, belief might be all the Spurs have left. It is probably still not enough.
An historic blown lead, several opportunities squandered down the stretch and a last-second, game-winning tip-in by Anunoby added up to a gut-wrenching 107-106 Game 4 defeat that will forever live in Knicks lore and Spurs infamy.
“Back’s against the wall,” Spurs guard Dylan Harper said. “If we believe we are who we think we are, then it’s going to show.”
For the Spurs, the stark reality is there may be no coming back from this level of gut-punch.
Spurs guard Stephon Castle on the mindset entering Game 5: “It’s a tough loss, obviously. It’s going to take us a minute to get over it. But obviously we still have belief in each other and confidence that we’re going to win the next game. It’s still first to four. Coach Mitch… pic.twitter.com/jGqSLvWNUT

With a chance to even the series Wednesday, the Spurs led by as many as 29 points in the first half, frittered away all of it with as poor of a second half as they could possibly play, and ultimately stood by helpless as Anunoby tapped in a Jalen Brunson misfire with 2.1 seconds left to move the Knicks one game away from a championship.
In the aftermath of epic collapse, Johnson, who on any other night would have giddily pierced the quiet in the MSG locker room with music blasting from the giant speaker he carries everywhere, did not deny the obvious.
“We’re all human,” said Johnson, the longest-tenured Spur. “It hurts.”
Instead of heading back to San Antonio with the series knotted, the Spurs face elimination in Game 5 on Saturday at the Frost Bank Center.
The Knicks, meanwhile, return to Texas on the brink of their first NBA championship since 1973, and looking for a knockout blow.
“We’re a resilient group,” said Anunoby, who scored 33 points and made game-saving play after game-saving play in the fourth quarter. “We’ve been through a lot. We’ve come back plenty of times when we’re behind.”
Indeed, the Spurs have led in the fourth quarter of every game of the series so far. All they have is a 3-1 series deficit to show for it.
Thanks to the Knicks’ latest display of never-say-die, New York stands four quarters away from capturing the third title in the club’s 80 years of existence.
All it took was the biggest recorded rally in NBA Finals history.
Since the NBA began keeping detailed play-by-play in 1997, no team had come back from more than 24 points down to win a Finals game. That is the deficit Boston overcame to beat the L.A. Lakers in 2008.
With 3:06 remaining before halftime, the Spurs went ahead 71-42 on a Harper layup. At half, they still led 76-49 and were 24 minutes away from bringing a tied series home to San Antonio.
“That’s a game where you sit there and you say you had the type of personnel that you had, you shot the ball decent, played a pretty clean game,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said over the din of what felt like all of New York City celebrating outside the Spurs’ interview room. “Then kind of didn’t finish the job.”
For the Spurs, the game unraveled slowly at first, and then all of a sudden.
As hot as they were in the first half, they went that cold in the second, managing only 30 points after intermission.
“We clearly weren’t the most hungry in the second half,” said Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, who finished with 24 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks but — like the rest of his team — faded after halftime.
Spurs guard Dylan Harper: “Shock, but there’s a whole lot more basketball to be played. After this is over, I’m going to take a shower, wash it off, and go get ready for Game 5.” pic.twitter.com/XTuBBM3MrC

Knicks guard Jalen Brunson, who ended with 36 points, gave New York its first lead of the game, 105-104, on a scoop shot with 38.8 seconds to go.
On the other end, Stephon Castle drew a foul on an offensive rebound and made a pair of foul shots to make it 106-105 Spurs with 30.3 ticks showing.
Then came a series of plays that might have the Spurs playing what-if until the start of fall training camp. With 16.1 seconds to go and the Spurs leading by one, De’Aaron Fox grabbed a loose rebound of a Brunson miss.
Instead of running clock and waiting to get fouled, Fox opted to go for the jugular.
“Try to get a layup, get up three,” Fox said, explaining his thought process. “Force them to need a three.”
Anunoby had other ideas.
He soared in to block Fox’s run-out layup try from behind, prelude for even greater heroics to come. With the Knicks down to their final gasp in the waning moments, Brunson took a quick 3-pointer and missed.
Anunoby came slashing through the Spurs’ defense to find a rebound that felt more like a pass, setting him up for a put-back basket and a place in New York immortality.
“I don’t know if there was a play bigger in the history in Knicks basketball,” Knicks coach Mike Brown said.
The Spurs, of course, saw none of this coming.
Not the blown lead. Not the 3-1 series hole. Certainly not Anunoby swooping in to snatch their soul in the New York night.
Asked afterwards at what point the Spurs clocked Anunoby crashing the paint for the game-winning putback, Castle’s answer was telling.
“I don’t think any of us did,” he said.
Now the Spurs return home with their championship hopes on life support, their season on the line.
If the Spurs need to believe in anything, it’s in miracles.
“As much as it hurts, we’re still playing,” Keldon Johnson said. “The main thing is the belief is there. We believe we can get it done. That’s not going to change regardless.”
