NEW YORK — Spurs guard Dylan Harper described OG Anunoby’s game-winning tip in of Jalen Brunson’s long 3-point miss with 1.2 seconds left in simple, sparse language.

The Knicks, meanwhile, had plenty to say about the play that capped a record 29-point comeback for a 107-106 victory on Wednesday night that put them on the brink of their first NBA championship since 1973.

“(Brown) told me I need to get on the glass, offensive glass especially, and just use my ability, size, strength, athleticism, to make an impact on the offensive glass, and it happened in the end,” Anunoby said.
Coming out of a timeout with 5.7 seconds left, the unguarded Anunoby threw the inbounds pass to Brunson, who took one dribble before launching a 31-foot shot while being doubled by Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox.
As soon as the ball left Brunson’s hand and without a single Spur paying him notice, Anunoby began sprinting through the lane toward the basket. After the ball hit the front of the rim, he tipped it in as Harper jumped for the ball.
“(Brunson) got a pretty good look and I just went in and crashed,” Anunoby said. “Tried to get a tip dunk or something. The ball went over my head, so I couldn’t really dunk it, so I tried to tip it in softly, and it went in.”
When Brunson’s shot went up, Harper left Landry Shamet to drift into the paint for the rebound. He was in perfect position to grab the ball, but Anunoby got there first.
“I could play wish I could have did this, wish I could have did that. But at the end of the day, he tipped the ball, and it went in the rim,” Harper said. “I definitely thought I had a hand on it. I definitely think I helped put the ball in the rim. But just got to box out.”
Stephon Castle was also in position to grab the rebound. But the Spurs guard was blocking out Karl-Anthony Towns when Anunoby sprinted through the lane.
“I don’t think any of us did,” Castle said when asked if he was aware Anunoby was racing unimpeded toward the basket. “I had Towns. I tried to make sure he didn’t get the offensive rebounds. I didn’t really see him.”
Wembanyama and Fox both turned to look toward the basket after Brunson released the ball, unaware Anunoby was already on his way to the paint.

Brunson said the Spurs’ decision to double him aided Anunoby.
“Had two guys contesting, so was able to get some pressure off the rim. Got a good bounce off the rim and OG being OG just made a play,” Brunson said.
Anunoby said it all boiled down to him having freedom of movement throughout the possession.
“When the shot went up, I was free,” he said. “There was no one boxing me out.”
Anunoby also had the game’s biggest defensive play when he blocked Fox’s layup attempt with 11.4 seconds left and the Spurs ahead 106-105.
“(Tried) to get a layup, get up three. Force them to need a three,” Fox said. “OG made a good block.”
The block came as Fox drove to the basket after getting the rebound in the open court following Brunson’s miss on a driving floater. Asked why he didn’t stop and force the Knicks to foul him, Fox said, “I just thought I’d be able to outrun them. That’s it.”
Anunoby and LeBron James are the only players since 1997 with a blocked shot and a go-ahead basket in the final 15 seconds of a playoff win. James did it for Cleveland against Indiana in a first-round game.
