NEW YORK — Spurs center Luke Kornet and his family attended Mass on Sunday morning at one of his favorite houses of worship on the road, venerable St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Fifth Avenue.
“St. Patrick’s is magnificent,” Kornet, who attends Mass in San Antonio at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, said of the cathedral that opened in 1879, some 20 years after its construction began thanks largely to the funding and work of thousands of Irish immigrants.
“We were there for Mass this morning and I’ve been there plenty of times over the years,” said Kornet, a ninth-year pro. "I love seeing it and realizing that there’s a group of people who decided to try to build this thing and that it can last for decades and decades for the faithful to go in and to worship God, frankly.
“So it’s cool to be able to be able to be part of that and to be able to witness the incredible work that a lot of people had to participate in to be able to give us this place of worship that’s been able to last for a long time.”
In his blog on the online publishing platform Medium, Kornet once posted a review of St. Patrick’s that ncluded his photos of the interiors and exteriors of the churches he visited.
“Quite the start for the 2023–24 season,” Kornet wrote. “St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Seat of the Archbishop of New York. … I am always down for a little subway ride to make it to St. Pat’s if time permits and this day, time permitted!
