DETROIT — When teachers gave Luke Kornet a writing assignment in school, it sometimes hit him like, “Eat your spinach. It’s good for you.”

But there’s plenty of ways to make spinach fun. Quiche Florentine, salads, sandwiches and dips. Creamed, sautéed with bacon, or cooked into a casserole. You can get pretty creative with the leafy green, which is also how the Spurs center approaches writing now.

“Honestly, I really enjoy creative writing,” Kornet said. “Wrote a lot of papers as a kid, but they’re all like research papers and stuff like that. Then I started doing this and it’s way more fun and way more enjoyable.”

“This” is Kornet’s eclectic, entertaining blog, which can be found on the online publishing platform Medium.

“A lot of people have podcasts, but I find writing to be a little bit more fun,” he said. “You can take time and curate it a little more and, yeah, it’s kind of more enjoyable.”

And it’s a big hit with his followers.

“…Always a great feeling when I get the notification you’ve posted! Don’t stop!” a reader named Ashwmarkle wrote in response to Kornet’s latest post.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson is also a fan.

“I think he’s one of the most creative minds I’ve ever been around in basketball. He creates a lot of joy in our locker room," Johnson told reporters before a recent game.

Kornet, 30, launched his blog in summer 2023 while with the Boston Celtics.

A devout Roman Catholic, he devoted his first post to his faith, introducing what he called a series intended to “shine a light on the Catholic churches and parishes” that have “sustained, inspired, uplifted, and comforted me throughout the long NBA season.”

Indeed, when Kornet returned to Boston in January for the first time since he signed with the Spurs last summer, Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla said one of the things he remembered most about the big man was he “went to Mass when we were on the road.”

“I hope sharing these incredible houses of worship and the more incredible faith of the patrons therein will open eyes and hearts to the unique truth, goodness, and beauty of the Catholic faith,” Kornet wrote.

Among his favorite houses of worship: New York City’s famed St. Patrick’s Cathedral. His posts often included his photos of the interiors and exteriors of the churches he visited.

“Quite the start for the 2023–24 season,” Kornet wrote. “St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Seat of the Archbishop of New York. … I am always down for a little subway ride to make it to St. Pat’s if time permits and this day, time permitted! It is an incredibly refreshing and relieving place to enter compared to the never-ending storefronts of 5th Avenue in Manhattan. I mean look at these doors!”

In another early post, Kornet talked about how much he likes the Canadian national anthem “O Canada.”

“It’s as perfect of an anthem as one can construct — succinct, starts strong, emotional bridge, rounds back for a triumphant big finish,” he wrote. “I’m just saying if they had a better PR firm and a more hospitable climate, they’d have to be building a wall on their southern border to keep us out!”

Kornet pushed himself away from the keyboard for about two years before returning in January to give what he called the “metaphorical pen and parchment another shot.”

“It’s something I wanted to pick back up,” he said. “I like writing for humor and also to be able to tie in some other stuff too. I was kind of putting them out there, honestly, just to get reps and practice it.”

“Now some may ask, “Luke, why were you away so long? What makes you think you won’t give up this time? What’s Victor like as a person?” All great questions, some of which I’m asked more than others,” Kornet wrote. “The truth is that I’m a weak-willed, noncommittal sham of a writer whose most prolific works consist of annual Christmas card musings and a 3-page autobiography I wrote when I was 9 (surely that Gateway hard drive exists somewhere.)”

In his most recent posts, Kornet wrote about the winter-storm drama the Spurs experienced in traveling from a game in snow-plagued Charlotte back to San Antonio a few weeks ago, how being dependent on God has brought him freedom, and his admiration for New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel.

“Look around any sports media outlet,” he wrote, “and you’re bound to find stories about the 6’4” former linebacker who lets truth reign via hard-biting jokes and genuine, physical affection (get you a man who can do both, ladies.). Able to enter the trenches as well as he can direct others into them. Who, as a man, you’re ashamed to be attracted to and then feel both better and worse about it when your wife feels the same way."

Kornet said it typically takes him anywhere from one to three hours to complete a post and that it’s not always done in one session.

“I’ll leave it for a little bit and then maybe come back later that night or the next day and try to look through a fresh lens and cut out some stuff, restructure some stuff,” he said.

Kornet also has a few “editors” look at his posts before he publishes them.

“I ask their thoughts and make sure it’s all kind of solid,” he said after before Monday’s game against the Pistons. “I send it to my wife just making sure it’s all stuff we’re cool with. And then if it hits on certain topics, I have certain people I have look at it, especially with faith stuff. I want to make sure it’s not inaccurate or that I’ve given a bad witness or anything like that.”

Kornet has a reputation for being one of the funniest players in the league, so what he pens often has a comedic touch.

“You hopefully can live in this right space where nothing’s offensive or insulting but also have the ability to kind of be human about it,” he said.

So, Kornet was asked after a recent practice, when does your book come out?

“We are in talks with publishers,” he jokingly told reporters, before adding, “zero (chance). Well, I don’t know. A book would probably be much later in life. The blogs are fun.”

Not surprisingly given his hobby, Kornet also loves to read and has a variety of favorite books, including Stephen Colbert’s satire “I Am America (And So Can You!)”, J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic high-fantasy novel “Lord of the Rings”, and Fyodor Dostoyevsky philosophical classic “The Brothers Karamazov”.

“That was probably maybe my favorite book that I read, but that was also pretty advanced and difficult to get through,” Kornet said in an interview with the San Antonio Express-News of Dostoeysk’s masterpiece set in 19th century Russia.

“I try to read some of those classics a little bit. I read (Ernest Hemingway’s) ‘The Old Man and the Sea’ this year, some of those books you read in school for a test and you actually didn’t get what the book was about. I just try to read a lot of different stuff.”

As for his blog, it’s all about having fun and exploring his creative side.

“I really enjoy it,” he said.
