pic.twitter.com/cQ28mY3OFp

pic.twitter.com/MUwQ0BaliS

Why Spurs struggled from 3-point range in second half against Knicks

San Antonio Spurs forward Julian Champagnie (30) and New York Knicks guard Landry Shamet (44) look down the court during Game 1 of the NBA Finals at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, on Wednesday, June 3, 2026.
Julian Champagnie entered the NBA Finals eager to play the villain role against his hometown team.
“I have a lot of friends who are New York fans,” the Spurs forward said. “I would love to spoil their plans.”
Champagnie seemed well on his way to making it happen in the first half of Game 1, but his plans went awry in the second half of the 105-95 loss to the Knicks on Wednesday night.
The Brooklyn native scored 15 of his 16 points in the first half on 5 of 6 from 3-point range before going 0 for 4 in the second half.
But Champagnie wasn’t the only member of the Western Conference champs to go cold after halftime. The Spurs made just 2 of 19 from distance after the break.
For the game, they shot 25.6% (11 of 43) from beyond the arc after entering the game shooting 36.5%.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson: “Missing shots or not, 16 assists for us is not our brand of basketball. … That’s something that is not up to the standard, anywhere close to what we’re used to and how we play.” pic.twitter.com/cQ28mY3OFp

“We missed some good shots,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “There will be some possessions we could have worked the clock more, worked them more defensively. I kind of refer to them as just shots. Is it a bad shot, a good shot? I don’t really know, but it’s just a shot. We probably could be a little more greedy on that possession to get something better as a group.”
Champagnie was red hot in the first half after scoring 20 points and hitting six 3s in the 111-103 Game 7 victory over Oklahoma City in the conference finals on Saturday. His five 3s were the third most in a Finals game by a Spurs player, trailing only Danny Green’s seven and Gary Neal’s six. He
“I was just taking what the defense gave me,” he said.
Champagnie said the Knicks didn’t do anything different defensively to shut the Spurs down in the second half. New York overcame a 14-point deficit in the third quarter by scoring 11 unanswered points to close the game for their 12th consecutive postseason victory.
“I just think we could do a better job with moving the ball around a little bit, honestly and truly,” Champagnie said. “In the first half, we were really, really connected.”
But that wasn’t the case after halftime. The Spurs finished with just 16 assists, including only five in the second half, after entering the game averaging 25.1 in the playoffs.
“Us ending the ending the game with only 16 assists is not something we want,” said De’Aaron Fox, who had just seven points on 3 of 13 from the field and 0 of 4 from deep. “We want to continue to have (our threes taken) in rotation obviously and we have to make shots as well.”
Said Johnson, "Missing shots or not, 16 assists for us is not our brand of basketball. That’s something that is not up to the standard, anywhere close to what we’re used to and how we play.”
While Champagnie didn’t give any credit to New York’s defense, coach Mike Brown said the Knicks focused on slowing the Spurs sharpshooter down in the second half.
“We have to keep getting to Champagnie,” Brown said. “Champagnie had five threes in the first half, and we did a better job of closing out to him and trying to get him off the three-point line.”
Devin Vassell, who had a rare sub-par game in the playoffs with nine points on 4 of 11 from the field and 1 of 6 from distance, predicted the Spurs will shoot better in Game 2 Friday night.
“We were getting good looks,” he said. “We’ll be a lot better. We’ll be a lot more comfortable next game. We rushed some of our shots. But I think we had quality looks on our threes. With all the shooters we have, we’re confident those are going to go down.”
Spurs guard Devin Vassell: “We know we have to control the boards. In this series, they like to crash the glass. So it can’t just be one half where we’re crashing the glass. We have to help Vic. We have to help the bigs down there. That’s going to be a huge part of the series.” pic.twitter.com/MUwQ0BaliS

Like Champagnie, rookie Dylan Harper also struggled in the second half, scoring just four of his 16 points in the second half after becoming the first rookie to score in double figures in the opening quarter of a Finals game in the last 25 years. His 10 points in the first period were the third most in any quarter by a rookie in the Finals since 1996-97.
“I just got to keep on staying aggressive,” he said. “I got to keep my foot on the gas.”
Johnson dismissed the notion that the Spurs might have been tired after their grueling series with the Thunder.
“I don’t think it was fatigue,” the coach said. “I’m sure guys got tired at times, but I didn’t feel like anyone’s performance was based on fatigue. We just need to be sharper and execute better and continue to work the game and not fight it at times and play the right way.”
