The Spurs simply did not get enough from Wembanyama in Game 5. At halftime, he was only 2-for-6 from the field with one rebound. That’s not going to cut it on the road against a championship-quality team that was desperate for a win. Wembanyama wasn’t terrible, mind you, as he was 12-for-12 at the line and turned it over only twice. But offensively, he wasn’t aggressive enough and didn’t fight for position. Defensively, he seemed a step slow and was mysteriously out of rebounding position too often. For the Spurs to win this series, they’ll need a pair of monster performances. This was just too pedestrian.

De’Aaron Fox
The good: Fox had eight assists and only one turnover. His ability to run this offense in this hectic environment undoubtedly proves his worth. Despite losing some of his quickness to his ankle injury, he was still able to swipe three steals and play pretty good defense. The bad: Fox was only 1-for-8 from the field in the first half. He was a little better in the second half but his inability to make shots in key situations was definitely a damper. Overall: Fox was useful but he wasn’t much of a difference-maker.

Stephon Castle
The Spurs aren’t in this game without Castle’s production. He was uber efficient on his way to 24 points in 33 minutes. He was 3-for-5 from three-point range, 4-for-6 on two-pointers and 7-for-8 at the free throw line. He also added six assists, five rebounds and three steals. Castle was a little too loose with the ball and his aggression on defense went overboard at times, which led to foul trouble. However, without his efficiency on offense and his competitiveness on defense, it would have been a blowout loss for San Antonio.

Devin Vassell
Vassell was 0-for-4 in the first half before improving to 2-for-7 in the second half. Both of his made field goals were three-pointers. That said, Vassell’s inability to shoot it straight hurt the cause. The Spurs have come to rely on him a lot in the postseason so his misses were an even bigger deal than usual. Vassell passed the ball well, played quality defense and pulled down a couple contested boards … but six points in 36 minutes just wasn’t enough production.

Julian Champagnie
Champagnie busting out of his slump was a silver lining. In the first four games against the Thunder, he was shooting 29.7% from the field and 19.4% from the three-point line. So, yeah, going for 22 points on 8-for-15 shooting from the field was a big deal. Unfortunately, though, there are some caveats. He had 17 points in the first half — so he didn’t do much after halftime. Second, Champagnie’s defense wasn’t as good as usual. Too many times he was caught behind his man. Let’s hope he can have more well-rounded affairs going forward against OKC.

Dylan Harper
I mean, Harper at first glance was pretty darn bad. He had three painful turnovers and was only 1-for-5 from the field. Harper not making a single two-pointer in his 25 minutes is tough to deal with because his ability to get to the rim was an attribute the Spurs had built their success around. But there are a few things to think about. First, he’s not 100% healthy, which makes it even more difficult for a rookie to thrive in this pressure-packed scenario. Moreover, I liked his defense — particularly his man-to-man D. He grabbed key rebounds when others were bobbling. Harper also improved quite a bit in the second half. He had no turnovers after intermission and he was much better about corralling loose balls and finding open teammates.

Keldon Johnson
Johnson has struggled for a majority of the playoffs. But in Game 5, he was one of the few players on the squad who seemed ready to play. He finished with 15 points in 20 minutes. His effort and tenacity were at higher levels than most of his teammates. It wasn’t all bluebonnets and sunshine, though. He needed 13 shots to score 15 points and there were a couple poor fouls among his five total fouls. But, yeah, all in all, Johnson played well enough for the Spurs to win.

Luke Kornet
Kornet wasn’t bad. Hell, he held the fort a little better than we’ve come to expect. That said, his production was difficult to spot. His most notable play was a tip-in attempt that was goaltended — a call the refs inexplicably missed. Other than that, he didn’t tangibly do much. Grit-wise, Kornet was better than usual … so I’ll classify that as an overall win.

Carter Bryant
Following the Game 4 tongue lashing, Bryant looked no worse for wear in Game 5. In fact, he had a slick dunk down the middle of the lane and buried a three-pointer. Unfortunately, though, his youthfulness was apparent a couple times. He left SGA open in a late clock situation from beyond the three-point line that allowed the Thunder’s superstar to get going. There was also a needless foul that Bryant should have avoided. It was a step in the right direction, though, from a big-picture perspective.

Harrison Barnes
Barnes played less than four minutes and didn’t really do anything. It was somewhat surprising to see him not play more considering he looked halfway competent in Game 4.

Mitch Johnson
Coach Mitch shoulders a decent amount of blame. It didn’t appear as if he did much to help Wembanyama get going. The team’s lack of fortitude and energy was also partially on him. The defensive gameplan unraveled. All in all, it was a night Spurs fans will hope they can forget.
