Be the desperate team
The Thunder approached Game 5 with a back-against-the-wall urgency the Spurs could not or would not match.
To save their season in Game 6, the Spurs will need to flip that script.
All season long, the Spurs have responded to losses with a competitiveness that has belied their young age.
Until Games 2 and 3 of this series, they had not dropped two games in a row since the middle of January.
The Thunder in the conference finals is a different breed of opponent than anything the Spurs faced during the regular season, however. They will show up to the Frost Bank Center primed for the kill.
The Spurs must play as if the life of their season depends on it, because it does.
Wemby must be Wemby
Victor Wembanyama is coming off a bizarre Game 5 in which he scored 20 points, but missed 11 of 15 shots and was generally indecisive on offense.
He will need to be better in Game 6.
When Wembanyama is forceful from the get-go, the Spurs’ offense develops a rhythm and confidence that can become demoralizing to the opposition.
Twice in the series, Wembanyama has topped 30 points. The Spurs are 2-0 in those games.
On nights in which Wembanyama is more ordinary on offense, the Spurs struggled for traction.
The 22-year-old Frenchman views himself as an “ethical” basketball player whose only goal is to make the right play. With the Spurs’ season on the line, it might be time for him to get aggressive in seeking his own points.
When the Thunder have been successful against the 7-foot-4 All-Star, they have been able to limit his touches near the paint. To get Wembanyama going Thursday, the Spurs need to find him more opportunities at the rim.
For the Spurs to keep their season alive, Wembanyama needs to play out of this world and out of his mind.
Contain Jared McCain
With a pair of important ball-handlers in Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell out in Game 5, the Thunder started second-year guard Jared McCain.
The 22-year-old McCain delivered a 20-point performance to complement Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s 32 and Alex Caruso’s 22.
Oklahoma City is 3-0 in the series when McCain scores in double figures.
If the Thunder do wind up closing out the series, it could be the conference finals were won at the February trade deadline.
That’s when OKC obtained McCain from Philadelphia for the cost of four future draft picks, three of them in the second round.
McCain’s talent has never been a question.
The former Duke standout was considered an early frontrunner for Rookie of the Year in December 2024, when a meniscus tear ended his inaugural NBA season with the 76ers. That honor eventually went to the Spurs’ Stephon Castle.
With Gilgeous-Alexander, a two-time league MVP at the trigger, the Thunder’s offense can be difficult enough to contain. When players such as McCain get going, that task can feel impossible.
