Spurs cruise to comfortable Game 4 win, even the series vs. Thunder

Victor Wembanyama scored a game-high 33 points, and the San Antonio Spurs’ defense smothered the Oklahoma City Thunder throughout a dominant 103-82 win in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals on Sunday.

Proper adjustments made for Wemby, Spurs

Wembanyama said the Spurs would find out what they were made of after Game 3. He didn’t leave any room for interpretation in Game 4.

Wembanyama was ferocious throughout the night. He put his stamp on the game from the first tip and played with a sense of purpose and aggression he hadn’t shown in the past two games. The Spurs reoriented their defense to take away a lot of his long closeouts, saving him more energy to attack the rack on offense.

The Spurs’ game plan adjustment of no longer high-trapping Gilgeous-Alexander and instead letting the nearby helpers collapse on him at the nail shut down the Thunder offense. San Antonio no longer is gambling on giving up wide-open 3s repeatedly, and that has made the game more predictable for the team. The Thunder crossed the 50-point threshold with 3:28 left in the game, which is shocking. At that point, the Thunder were just 2 of 17 from deep after having a great shooting night in Game 3.

In the end, the Spurs showed they can shift their approach enough to keep up with the adjustment battle — and they didn’t even need a good shooting game to do it (38.9 percent shooting). This is a defensive series, and the Spurs further punctuated that Sunday evening.

A disastrous night for the Thunder

All things considered, this was objectively the Thunder’s worst game of these playoffs by a mile.

Entering Game 4, Oklahoma City’s worst 3-point shooting game of the postseason came in Game 1 of its first-round series versus the Phoenix Suns, making a forgettable 30.4 percent of their 46 3-point attempts. On Sunday, it connected on an abysmal 18.2 percent from deep, just 6 of 33. The Thunder also had 20 turnovers.

After an astonishing 76 bench points in Game 3, they entered the fourth quarter of a blowout with just 34 points from their reserves. Jared McCain and Jaylin Williams, after being monumental parts of a Game 3 win, combined to shoot 2 for 17.

Wild what a well officiated game will do. That’s partial sarcasm and being a bitter cunt but there is plenty of truth to it.
OKC can suck it. I’m still furious about whatever the hell game 2 was. Argue with a wall. Tonight felt like the regular season tilts. Even with Fox being a shadow. That is is a BIG deal and could well be what decides the series. People sleep on just how good and impactful he is. Silver lining is damn SA has drafted and grown some studs.
I hope Wemby and the spurs run all over them. Hard to imagine this doesn’t go 7 with how good these teams are and how brazenly crooked the NBA seems to be these days. Either way i’ll watch so jokes on me I guess.

@Benjamin M. - This. Fox is really not himself at all. I was really impressed by how he played on D and contributed with ten boards. But even being able to go at 75% makes a difference because of how much he calms them down and reins in the turnovers. I was glad to see Harrison Barnes play more in this game for the same reason.

This is shaping up eerily like the last round for the Knicks. After sweeping the 76ers they got to rest for over a week while Detroit & Cleveland went seven. Now it looks there’s at least a good chance the same thing is going to happen: they’ll take a shot at sweeping Cleveland while SA & OKC may go the distance. Of course that’s no guarantee the Knicks will win (or even make it a competitive series), but it’s worked out for New York in the ECF and could be a big edge in the NBA Finals, too.

@Sam M. The difference is that the Finals are not played on an every-other-night basis. Unlike the conference finals, the NBA Finals allow days off between games, which allow players to recoup and recover.

@Art E. Fair point. If the Knicks end up sweeping the Cavs, the rest edge they’ll have in the finals will definitely dissipate after Game 1. If New York can steal that one on the road, it could be the key to them making it a tight series.

While this wasn’t a great game as it was a rout, this is a great series. After game one it felt the momentum was all Spurs. After games two and three, it felt like it was solidly OKC. Now with a Spurs blowout, it feels like the pendulum is back to the Spurs. I kind of think OKC better win this year because I think the Spurs are just going to better as their young core grows together going forward. I think if OKC wins game five it’s still a toss up. But I think if the Spurs win game five, they’ll win the series because they know they can win at home and will have already beaten OKC two out of three on the road in this series. Very excited for game 5.

How is it a terrible take?
This is the worse version of the Spurs we’ll see for, at least, the next 5 years. Payroll is under control for the next 3 years as rookie extensions are not kicking in till then. Blue chip talent was acquired 3 straight years at the top of the draft, led by maybe the biggest anomaly (in a good way) the league has ever seen.
If you know OKC’s path here, the Spurs blew past that timetable long ago. They’ve dominated them all season long head to head.
OKC needs to win, if they don’t, I would not be surprised seeing them making a push for Giannis in the off-season. They’re gonna need to match up a freak with a freak, and that ain’t Holmgren.
