Devin Vassell’s block of Chet Holmgren was ‘super important’ for Spurs
OKLAHOMA CITY — Devin Vassell kept his streak of blocks at the rim against 7-footers alive, and this defensive gem was the best of them all.
“Hell, yeah. Hell, yeah,” the 6-foot-5 Spurs forward said when asked if his rejection of 7-1 Chet Holmgren late in the second overtime of Monday’s 122-115 win in the West finals opener was his sweetest block of the playoffs after he thwarted Portland’s 7-3 Donovan Clingan in the first round and Minnesota’s 7-1 Rudy Gobert in the second.
Given the stage and the point in the game, it’s hard to argue that Vassell soaring to block Holmgren’s putback attempt after he rebounded a missed reverse layup by Alex Caruso with 46.1 seconds left and the Spurs nursing a 118-114 lead wasn’t his biggest play of the postseason.
“Make an impact anyway I can,” Vassell told the San Antonio Express-News as he walked from the locker room to the team bus at the Paycom Center.
Vassell on Tuesday said the sequence started with him seeing Caruso driving to the basket along the baseline against Victor Wembanyama.
“I was just trying to stay home, but I realized I lost my matchup, and Chet was my matchup,” Vassell said. “So when he got the rebound, it was just a matter of making a play. It was all instinct trying to make a play.”
In a team-high 51 minutes, Vassell finished with 13 points, six rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one steal in his latest all-around playoff effort.
His biggest play of all came against Holmgren. After the block, Spurs guard Dylan Harper rebounded Jalen Williams’ putback miss, which led to the Spurs taking a 120-114 advantage on Victor Wembanyama’s lob dunk on a feed from Stephon Castle.
“Shout out to Devin, that block was super important for us,” Spurs forward Julian Champagnie said. "We don’t win this game without him. I think if they get that bucket, it’s a whole different outcome. So big, big block by Devin.
Vassell said he is fearless against the big men because it’s no shame to get dunked on by them.
“They’re seven foot, so if I get dunked on, it’s like, who cares?” he said Tuesday. “They’re already six inches taller than me, so what’s the point? But I just want to go up there and get a block or contest or something like that. They’re momentum swingers. It really sets a tone for our team.”
