pic.twitter.com/jSfsojjy8O

How Devin Vassell delivered on both ends in Spurs win over Blazers

San Antonio Spurs guard Devin Vassell (24) beats a drum as forward Kelly Olynyk (8), forward Victor Wembanyama (1) and teammates react following the Spurs’ 111-98 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers in Game 1 of a first-round NBA playoff series at Frost Bank Center on Sunday, April 19, 2026, in San Antonio.
The Spurs have a simple rule when it comes to who gets to beat their celebratory drum at midcourt after wins.
“We always try to put the spotlight on the ones who deserve it,” Victor Wembanyama said.
Vassell scored eight of his 15 points in the period to help prevent the Blazers from taking control of a game that was still up for grabs. In nine minutes in the third, he also had two impressive back-to-back blocks in a 17-second span that highlighted his two-way ability.
With the Spurs clinging to a seven-point lead midway through the third, Vassell rejected a shot in the paint by 7-foot-3 Donovan Clingan before recording a chase-down block on a driving layup attempt by Jrue Holiday.
“That’s what we talk about, not giving up on the play,” Vassell said of running down Holiday. “Every possession matters, whether it’s the first possession in the first quarter or the last possession of the fourth quarter. Play to the whistle.”
Spurs center Luke Kornet, who finished with 10 points and six rebounds, called both blocks “spectacular,” but he focused on Vassell’s rejection of Holiday in transition.
Spurs guard Devin Vassell on his first playoff experience in a Game 1 win against the Trailblazers: “Fans were amazing, atmosphere was crazy. … As we got stops and got out in transition and really settled into our game, that’s when we started to pull away.” pic.twitter.com/jSfsojjy8O

“I feel like his ability to make plays like that is something that’s a pretty unique gift of his, and it was awesome to see it in action,” Kornet said. “Those were some really high-effort, really high-impact plays.”
Vassell wasn’t done showing off his skills after those defensive gems. He hit hit back-to-back 3-pointers before sinking a mid-range pull-up bank shot to give the Spurs an 11-point lead with 4:37 left in the period.
The scoring flurry came in a span of 1:17 and helped put the Spurs in control for the remainder of the game.
Vassell finished the game with four 3s to set a franchise record for most field goals from beyond the arc in a playoff debut. Hall of Famer Tony Parker and Stephen Jackson share the previous mark of three.
Vassell called the impressive two-way stretch one of the most memorable of his career. Making it even more special, he got to celebrate his second 3 in the run with Keldon Johnson after the Blazers called a timeout with 5:08 left in the quarter.
Vassell and Johnson, whose seven seasons ranks him just ahead of Vassell on the list of the Spurs’ current longest-tenured players, suffered through a lot of tough times together, including back-to-back 22-win seasons, during the franchise’s six-year playoff drought that begin after the 2018-19 season.
“That’s my brother,” Vassell said of Johnson. “And we’ve dreamed and talked about times like this. I wouldn’t want to celebrate this with anybody else. KJ’s my dog.”
The Spurs have come to expect Vassell delivering on both ends of the court, but his all-around play in the third quarter still raised eyebrows.
“Even though we expect it, it’s still super impressive and we want to acknowledge that it’s big time,” Wembanyama said in a nod to Vassell getting to bang the drum for the first time this season.
“That block, the chase down, was really amazing. And other plays like this, some of them that don’t appear in the stat sheet, it’s super valuable and it just shows he embraces the culture, the game plan, everything, one-hundred percent.”
