pic.twitter.com/S8OGPyfsyM

Why Spurs’ Dylan Harper was in ‘attack mode’ in first playoff start

San Antonio Spurs guard Dylan Harper (2) lays the ball in over Oklahoma City Thunder guard Ajay Mitchell (25) during Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City, Monday, May 18, 2026. The Spurs defeated the Thunder 122-115 in double overtime.
OKLAHOMA CITY — The sore right ankle that forced De’Aaron Fox to sit out the Spurs’ 122-115 double-overtime victory over Oklahoma City on Monday night could be a problem for the All-Star guard throughout the Western Conference finals.
“It’s one of those deals where it’s not going away for as long as we’re playing, I don’t believe,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said before the game.
Fortunately for the Spurs, they have a reliable insurance policy in the form of rookie guard Dylan Harper.
Gaining his first playoff start after the Spurs ruled Fox out after warmups, the No. 2 overall pick of last June’s draft had 24 points, 11 rebounds and six assists in 47 minutes. He also had seven steals to become the first rookie in NBA postseason history to record a game with 20-plus points, 10-plus rebounds, five-plus assists and seven-plus steals.
“He was phenomenal,” Johnson said.
Harper said he didn’t have any jitters after learning an hour before tipoff he would get the start in place of Fox, who was averaging 18.8 points and 5.8 assists in a team-leading 33.3 minutes per game entering Monday’s game.
“Treat it like every other game,” Harper said of his mindset going into the biggest outing of his fledgling pro career. “I had the mindset of just being me. I tried to stay on the forefront and not on my heels. That was the biggest thing. Kind of just being in attack mode at all times.”
With Harper, 20, starting in place of Fox, 28, the Spurs sported the youngest starting five in a conference finals game since 1970-71 when the league introduced its conferences. Their average age of 22 years, 446 days was 279 days younger than the Bill Walton-led 1976-77 Portland Trail Blazers team that won the NBA championship, per Spurs radio voice Dan Weiss.
“It means the world,” Harper said of starting on such a big stage. “I feel like not a lot of people get this experience, just to be part of such a great organization, a great group of guys. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. I think this is kind of where I’m supposed to be and I’m just going to keep taking it step by step.”
With his seven steals, Harper became one of just five players in franchise history with six-plus steals in a playoff game. Alvin Robertson, Avery Johnson, Manu Ginobili and Kawhi Leonard are the others.
“My seven steals was kind of a team thing,” Harper said. “It was more just rotations, and just for me, being in the right place and just letting my instincts take over.”
On the offensive end, Harper had a big moment in the second OT when he gave the Spurs a 115-111 lead with 2:04 left by sinking a drive and a free throw after he was fouled hard in the face by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
“We’re going to keep fighting,” Harper said after the Spurs outscored the Thunder 14-7 in the second OT to secure the win. “That’s the biggest message. There are obviously lapses where we could have done stuff better, but we kept fighting and fighting and fighting.”
Spurs guard Dylan Harper, on if he realized he was taking part in a classic game: “Nah, I’m just trying to win. That’s the biggest thing on my mind. … We all went in there with the mindset of if it takes two overtimes, let’s double down and win.” pic.twitter.com/S8OGPyfsyM
