pic.twitter.com/S8OGPyfsyM

— Spurs Nation (@ Spurs_Nation) May 19, 2026

3 Takeaways as Victor Wembanyama steals the show vs. Thunder

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) and San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle (5) celebrate a Game 1 win of the Western Conference Finals at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City, Monday, May 18, 2026. The Spurs defeated the Thunder 122-115 in double overtime.

OKLAHOMA CITY — And that was only Game 1.

In doing so, the 22-year-old Wembanyama became the youngest player in NBA history to notch a 40-20 game in the playoffs. He is only the second Spurs player of any age to do it, following David Robinson.

The Spurs needed every centimeter of Wembanyama’s heroics to outlast the defending champion Thunder, who lost for the first time in the playoffs this postseason after sweeping their first two series.

Making a spot start in place of the injured De’Aaron Fox, rookie Dylan Harper had 24 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and seven steals.

Only two rookies in NBA postseason history have logged a game with at least 20 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and five steals. The other was Magic Johnson in 1980.

Oklahoma City guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander began his night hoisting the Michael Jordan trophy, named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player for the second year in a row. The rest of his evening was a struggle.

Gilgeous-Alexander eventually found his way to 24 points, 12 assists and five steals, but Spurs defenders harassed him into an 8-for-20 shooting performance.

Alex Caruso exploded for 31 points off the bench for the Thunder, a display that included eight 3-pointers. It all amounted to a game that went down to the wire, and then kept going down to the wire.

Wembanyama hit the game’s most important shot, a do-or-die 3-pointer from the logo with 26.2 seconds remaining in the first overtime to knot the score at 108-108.

If Wembanyama had missed, the Spurs likely lose. Wembanyama then brought the game home in the second OT.

His dunk off a pass from Harper on Chet Holmgren with 1:01 left drew a foul. The ensuing free throw put the Spurs ahead 118-114.

The Thunder missed three shots on their ensuing possession, with Devin Vassell swatting Holmgren for one of them.

After that, Castle found Wembanyama on another lob to increase the Spurs’ lead to 120-114. For good measure, Wembanyama put the finishing touches on the game by blocking a Jalen Williams finger roll at the other end.

After that one, Wembanyama posed in front of the Spurs’ bench, looking around at a sold-out Thunder crowd who could only stare back in disbelief.

“Winning one game means something,” Wembanyama said, “but it doesn’t mean everything.”

Here are three takeaways from the Spurs’ Game 1 victory, with Game 2 on tap Wednesday at the Paycom Center:

1. Wemby “100%” motivated by SGA’s MVP?

Before the game could tip off, Wembanyama had to sit through a ceremony honoring Gilgeous-Alexander’s second consecutive MVP trophy.

It is a trophy Wembanyama covets as his own. He finished third in this year’s voting.

Asked if he thought Wembanyama was sparked by the indignity of watching the Thunder celebrate one of their own, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said: “One-hundred percent.”

“If you’re a competitor and you see another competitor get rewarded with what you want, I don’t think it had any effect on the game that didn’t make him play harder than anyone else, but if that’s motivation we all get motivated by different things,” Johnson said.

Wembanyama acknowledged as much.

“I still got a lot to learn,” he said. “I want to win that trophy many times in my career.”

2. Harper shines in first playoff start

Harper found out about an hour before tipoff Monday that he would be starting Game 1 of the Western Conference finals. On the road. Against the defending NBA champions.

With Fox a late scratch due to right ankle soreness, Harper earned the first playoff start of his young career in place of an All-Star. Though the 20-year-old Harper did not shoot efficiently — he was 8 of 20 — he was relentless in attacking the paint, packed the box score with rebounds, steals and assists and came up with a slew of timely plays down the stretch.

Spurs guard Dylan Harper, on if he realized he was taking part in a classic game: “Nah, I’m just trying to win. That’s the biggest thing on my mind. … We all went in there with the mindset of if it takes two overtimes, let’s double down and win.” pic.twitter.com/S8OGPyfsyM

— Spurs Nation (@ Spurs_Nation) May 19, 2026

As importantly, Harper also committed only one turnover.

“I think he showed composure beyond his years,” Johnson said.2

Before the game, Johnson said Fox’s ankle issue will likely plague him through the end of the playoffs. Even if Fox returns to the floor, there is no guarantee he will be 100%.

Harper’s contributions are going to continue to be invaluable as the series progresses.

3. Even so, the Spurs missed Fox

With Fox in street clothes, Harper and Castle had to spend more time on the ball than usual.

“Man,” Castle said, “it was so tiring.”

In Castle’s case, that fatigue could be partially responsible for the whopping 11 turnovers he coughed up.

Castle finished with 17 points and 11 assists. The turnovers were a black mark on his night.

If Fox had been available, it stands to reason the ball wouldn’t have had to be in Castle’s hands quite so much. He probably wouldn’t have had a chance to commit so many turnovers.

Locked in a tight game down the stretch of the fourth quarter and two overtimes, the Spurs could have used Fox’s veteran know-how to settle things down.

If they can get Fox back in the lineup for Game 2 on Wednesday, it will only be a boon.
