Spurs vow to get physical with Blazers guard Scoot Henderson

Portland Trail Blazers guard Scoot Henderson (00) rebounds the ball as San Antonio Spurs guard Dylan Harper (2) falls the ground after attempting a shot during the first half of Game 2 of a first-round NBA playoff series at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Tuesday, April 21, 2026. The Spurs lost 106-103, tying the series 1-1.
Scoot Henderson and the Portland Trail Blazers got physical with the Spurs. Now they can expect the Spurs to respond in kind.
The 6-foot-4, 207-pound guard exploded for 31 points to lead the Blazers to a 106-103 win on Tuesday night that evened the first-round series 1-1.
“As a team, as a unit, I think that was our goal — to be aggressive,” Henderson said. “Hit everybody that comes through the paint, box out and play fast. I think that was all of our success and that kind of opened the floor for all of us.”
Henderson shot 11 of 17 from the field and 5 of 9 from 3-point range in 38 minutes to eclipse his regular season high of 28 points.
“(Henderson) has been shooting the ball really well,” Spurs forward Devin Vassell said. “Got to be more physical with him. No catch-and-shoots, no easy off-the-dribble pull-ups.
"We’re going to make it a lot harder for him because he’s feeling way too comfortable.”
Henderson, who averaged 14.2 points in 30 regular season games, scored 18 points on 7 of 11 from the floor and 2 of 4 from beyond the arc in Sunday’s opening game, which the Spurs won by an 111-98 score.
The No. 3 pick of the 2023 NBA Draft said he had the same mindset entering both games: “Go and kill whoever’s in my way.”
“But the adjustment that I made (in Game 2) was to play faster and shoot the open ones,” he added. “That opens up the floor for everyone else. That opened up the floor for (All-Star guard) Deni (Avdija) to attack. They were sending two at him sometimes. It makes the game easier for everybody else.”
The Spurs held Avdija to 14 points in 30 minutes after he tallied a team-high 30 in 39 minutes in Game 1.
Now, their focus shifts to slowing down Henderson, who missed 51 games this season while recovering from a hamstring injury he suffered during an offseason workout in September.
“Obviously, that’s a hard guy to stop, but we continue to play the way that we play,” Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox said. “If he’s got to get 30 and they win by three, I think we’re in a decent spot.”
But the Spurs might be without Victor Wembanyama in Game 3 on Friday night in Portland after he suffered a hard fall in the second period that landed him in the NBA’s concussion protocol.
“Praying for him, hoping he’s good, because as a competitor you don’t want one of the (other) team’s better players to get hurt,” Henderson said. “You want to beat them fully healthy. So I want to say that first. But I feel like our mission was to attack downhill. This game, it was, ‘Don’t be afraid to attack downhill.’ Once he went out, it’s not a great thing obviously, but it was keep getting downhill, keep attacking and keep getting open shots for everybody else.”
Henderson expects Portland fans to give the Blazers a warm welcome back home at Moda Center.
“Even if we were 0-2, I know they’d be there cheering us on like we were up 2-0,” he said. “All love to Rip City. I hope they tear the walls down.”
No matter how the Spurs defend him in Game 3, Henderson vowed to remain aggressive.
“I love the pressure, first and foremost,” he said. “I love the pressure whether I have the ball in my hands or not. But this role I’m in now is really just doing whatever’s best for the team. We’re trying to win. So I’m not thinking too much about it. But when I get the ball I want to attack and make something happen. I don’t want to be out there just being a liability. Continue to be myself, but also just doing what we need to win.”
He did plenty Tuesday.
"I don’t know if I have the words. Best game for him this season, maybe his career. He carried us,” Portland coach Tiago Splitter said.
