The space agency on Tuesday acknowledged Spurs center Victor Wembanyama’s latest achievement: Winning the league’s Defensive Player of the Year Award in historic fashion.

That bond first emerged in the offseason when Wembanyama, who has an interest in aeronautical science and cosmology, toured NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.
“My favorite (activity of the summer) was going to NASA and checking out all the stuff I’m passionate about from the inside,” he told reporters at Spurs media day last September. “My favorite aspect, so there (were) a few, but meeting astronauts that either have been to space or are going to and legends amongst them.”
The 22-year-old Frenchman was also part of a recent NASA live stream that included several Hollywood stars that bid good luck to the astronauts on the Artemis II mission to the moon.
“Hey, I’m Victor Wembanyama, and I play basketball in the NBA,” he said, per The Athletic. “But I’m not only interested in shooting hoops. I’m also interested in shooting stars, dark matter, and all other types of astronomical phenomena. And to Artemis II astronauts who are shooting for the moon, I wish them good luck and Godspeed.”
On Tuesday, it was NASA’s turn to reach out to Wembanyama, who was thrilled to win the 2026 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award in historic fashion.
The two-time All-Star and MVP finalist was named the league’s top defender on Monday night by a global media panel of 100 voters. He’s the youngest player to win the award and the first to do so unanimously since its inception in 1982-83.
“The real award is having it unanimous and youngest ever,” he told reporters Tuesday morning after shootaround. “That’s what I’m going to remember for sure. It’s a great achievement. It’s hope. It’s not the first (award for him), but the first of many for defensive player.”
Asked why he wanted badly for the vote to be unanimous, Wembanyama said, “It’s just very meaningful to me. It means there is no place for debate. It means that everybody agrees upon something. It’s impressive. … There is no asterisk in it. It’s like it’s not a subjective matter.”
Oklahoma City’s Chet Holmgren was the runner-up with 76 second-place votes.
The Spurs play Portland at 7 p.m. Tuesday night in Game 2 of their first-round Western Conference playoff series.
