Why Stephon Castle called Spurs rookie Carter Bryant a ‘weirdo’
Spurs guard Stephon Castle playfully chastised rookie forward Carter Bryant after the two connected early in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 128-118 loss to Denver on one of the most spectacular lob dunks of the season.
“He told me to stop staring at him like a weirdo,” Bryant said from the podium after the regular season finale.
The play began with Castle grabbing the rebound after a missed layup by the Nuggets’ David Roddy. Bringing the ball up court, Castle spotted Bryant racing past the defense toward the basket.
Castle released the ball from half court, putting it in perfect position for Bryant to complete a slam that pulled the Spurs within 101-95 with 11:14 left and brought injured star Victor Wembanyama out of his seat on the bench to applaud the play.
Afterward, Castle got on Bryant for shouting at him to make the pass.
“He was like, ‘You’re hard to miss, bro. You’re six (foot) eight. You’re running extremely fast,’ " Bryant said. "He was like, ‘I see you. I promise.’ I was like, ‘My bad.’ "
Told Bryant’s comments, Castle said, “Yeah, he was screaming my name. He almost gave it (away) for himself. But I saw him. I saw him the whole time.”
Castle finished the game with a near triple-double, recording 10 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists in 29 minutes in his return from a two-game absence due to a variety of nagging injuries.
Carter had 13 points, five rebounds, a season-high five assists and a season-best three blocks in a season-high 30 minutes.
In addition to the lob dunk from Castle, he had a forceful two-handed slam over Nikola Jokic in the first half.
Carter, who the Spurs selected 14th overall last June in the 2025 NBA Draft, finished the season strong after a slow start, averaging 14.0 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists while shooting 56.3% from 3-point range on 5.3 attempts over the last three games.
For the season, the 20-year-old Arizona alumnus averaged 4.2 points, 2.5 rebounds and 0.7 assists while shooting 33.5% from beyond the arc on 2.2 attempts over 71 games.
“Nobody expected me to play this year at all,” Bryant said. “A lot of people thought I’d be in the G (League) all year. So I’m just super proud of myself and super thankful for my teammates for constantly pushing me. Sometimes when you’re looking in the mirror and you’re like, ‘I can’t do anything right,’ they are telling you, ‘You’re going to be just fine. Just keep going.’
"So I’m super grateful for them.”
Even when one of them calls him a weirdo.
