San Antonio Spurs forward Carter Bryant (11) goes up for a shot around the Oklahoma City Thunder during the third quarter at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2026. The Spurs defeated the Thunder, 116-106.
Carter Bryant isn’t letting his perfectionist streak hold him back any more.
Looking more relaxed and confident, the rookie forward matched his season highs for points (11) and rebounds (five) and hit a season-high three 3s in helping the Spurs beat the shorthanded Oklahoma City Thunder 116-106 Wednesday night at the Frost Bank Center.
In 13 minutes off the bench, the No. 14 overall pick also matched his season high for steals (two). He shot 50% from beyond the arc on a season-high six attempts and even had a put-back dunk following a De’Aaron Fox miss late in the first quarter after missing several slams earlier in the season.
“Young players, they’re never mistake free,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “So once they figure that out, then sometimes they’re free to play with more effort and energy because the mistakes will be there and they’re going to get yelled at and they’re going to be held accountable and they’re going to continue to learn from them. But I think a lot of times for young guys, and it’s a good trait because that means they care, they’re trying to not make mistakes, they’re trying to be perfect at times. I think you see instances where they don’t trust their instincts and most of the guys that get to this league have good instincts, and so it’s rewarding to see a young man continue to grow incrementally in that way.”
Bryant, 20, said Johnson was spot on with that assessment.
“I was so fixated on being perfect because I’m a perfectionist and I want to be great,” the Arizona alumnus said. “You have to make a lot of mistakes. You’re going to have to go through a lot of hard things. You’re going to have to go through games where you thought you played absolutely terrible. And once you kind of get that out of your mind, it just is what it is. And I think that’s kind of just me working and then also the coaching staff believing in me and telling me, ‘Trust your work, understand what you put into the game.’”
