Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox didn’t know much about the NBA’s Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award until he learned in late March he was one of 12 candidates for the 2025-26 trophy.
“Funny enough, I never knew how you even got nominated,” the ninth-year pro said.
A panel of NBA executives choose six candidates from each conference based on their selfless play, their on- and off-court leadership as a mentor and role model to other players and their commitment and dedication to team.
“I didn’t know that, but I think it’s cool,” Fox said. “It’s cool that that’s getting noticed. And it’s getting noticed obviously because of the way I’m playing and the way I am around my younger teammates. And we’re winning games, so I’m happy about it.”
League players vote for the winner and the NBA makes a $25,000 donation to a charity of the recipient’s choice.
A big reason for Fox’s nomination has been his willingness to share the ball with young guards Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper while also playing second fiddle to Victor Wembanyama. But there have been occasions when the two-time All-Star has had to be more ball dominant like he was with the Sacramento Kings, when he annually averaged around 25 points per game, nearly seven more than his norm entering Friday night’s game against Dallas.
One of those occasions came Wednesday night.
With Wembanyama (rib) and Castle (knee) sidelined, Fox gave one of his vintage Kings-era performances, scoring 25 points on 10 of 20 from the field and 3 of 6 from 3-point range to lead the Spurs to a 112-101 victory over Portland.
His 20 shots were the most he’s taken since he put up 22 on his way to 29 points in a 121-106 win over Detroit on March 5.
“For me, every game is not going to be the same,” Fox said. "I let the game come to me. Sometimes I attack the game a little more. But, at the end of the day, those guys (Wembanyama, Castle and Harper) are extremely talented. They understand the game at an extremely high level, and it’s easy to play with them.
“When they’re not on the court, we as a collective have to be more aggressive, have to step up, have to take more shots, have to be better defensively because those are two of the best defensive players in the league as well.”
In 35 minutes against the Blazers, Fox also had seven assists, five rebounds and three steals, a stat-sheet stuffing performance that underscored what kind of production he could have if he wasn’t sacrificing for the good of the team.
“He’s been ridiculous in terms of his balancing act with that all year,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. "Some days it’s Steph (scoring a lot). A lot of times it’s Victor. Dylan’s obviously progressed a ton this year. We got a ton of guys that can score in double figures. And for someone who’s put up the production (Fox) has in his career, at this stage of his career to be able to be that kind of complimentary, nurture whoever’s night it is, while also having the pulse of ‘I will take this over at any moment’ is probably not discussed enough or not given enough value because that’s a really impactful thing for a young team that doesn’t have a ton of continuity and history together.
“He’s been absolutely valuable in that sense.”
Fox’s play has contributed to a remarkable turnaround season in which the Spurs have notched 61 wins — tied for fourth-most in franchise history — entering Friday night’s game after winning 34 last season and finishing with back-to-back 22-win seasons in 2022-23 and 2023-24.
When Fox, 28, arrived in San Antonio after Spurs general manager Brian Wright orchestrated a blockbuster three-team trade to acquire him from the Kings in February 2024, he was counting on eventually winning big but just not this quickly.
“I was thinking maybe a year or maybe two down the line,” Fox said. "But the talent we have in the locker room was going to be there. There are teams that are extremely talented, but you have to find a way to, one, jell together, and, two, (learn) details about the game. And guys have gotten it so quickly. It’s credit to our coaching staff and to the guys we have there. We have high-IQ basketball players. We have guys who are extremely smart and they put forth that effort into the game.
“And we’re reaping the benefits right now.”
In keeping with his reputation as a good teammate and as the only one of the Spurs’ top-seven scorers with playoff experience, Fox is trying to do what he can to prepare the younger players for the postseason.
“As a team, we need to bring up our attention to detail and our intensity to the game,” he said. “We’re like continue to enjoy each other, continue to enjoy the way that we play. Yes, the stakes are going to be higher. More eyes are going to be on us basically every game. More media is going to be around us, but we don’t want guys to be too tight. … We don’t want guys to change just because we’re playing for something a little more.”
Said forward Julian Champagnie, “Fox has done a really good job of talking to us.”
