Spurs star Victor Wembanyama leaves Monday’s game with rib injury
Spurs center Victor Wembanyama was ruled out for the second half of Monday night’s game against Philadelphia due to a left rib contusion.
Coach Mitch Johnson had no update after the game on the extent of Wembanyama’s injury.
“At halftime, I was told he wasn’t coming back and honest to God, I haven’t heard anything else up to this point,” Johnson said.
Wembanyama did not start the second half after posting 17 points, five rebounds and three blocks in 16 minutes. He went to the locker room for treatment shortly after colliding with the Sixers’ Paul George with 10:47 left in the second quarter but returned with 5:33 remaining before the break. He subbed out again with 44.3 seconds left before returning to the locker room.
The collision with George occurred when the forward attempted to intercept a pass thrown to Wembanyama as the Spurs pushed the ball up the court in transition.
“I think it would be a positive that he felt like he could come back and he played the last four or five minutes of the half, so it’s a positive from my perspective, but I have nothing (in the way of an update),” Johnson said.
The Spurs led 62-55 at the half in the first game of four-game homestand that will complete the regular season.
Wembanyama must play at least 20 minutes in one of the last three games to qualify for regular season awards.
