Victor Wembanyama chasing Dennis Rodman for Spurs rebounding feat

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) reaches for the ball above LA Clippers forward Isaiah Jackson (23) during the first half at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio on Friday, March 6, 2026. Wembanyama has posted five consecutive games with 15-plus rebounds, a streak that puts him second in team history and trails only Dennis Rodman’s nine straight games.
LOS ANGELES — Early in the first quarter Wednesday in San Francisco, Victor Wembanyama blocked a hook shot from Golden State’s Omer Yurtseven and collected the carom for his 15th rebound.
It gave Wembanyama his fifth consecutive game with at least that many, the second-longest such streak in Spurs history. The only Spurs player with a longer streak was Dennis Rodman, a factoid Wembanyama found amazing.
“I watched a lot of highlights,” Wembanyama said. “I remember him more on the Bulls than any other team.”
Rodman — who retired in 2000, four years before Wembanyama was born — once collected at least 15 rebounds in nine consecutive games for the Spurs.
It is a streak Wembanyama, even at 7-foot-4, is not sure he can match.
“They don’t make them like that anymore,” Wembanyama said.
Of course, they’ve never made anyone like Wembanyama, who ended Wednesday’s 127-113 victory over the Warriors with 41 points, 18 rebounds and three blocks on 16 of 22 shooting — all in 29 minutes of court time.
Two days after setting a season high with 41 points in a win over Chicago, Wembanyama equaled it at Golden State.
It marked the first time in his career that Wembanyama had produced at least 40 points in consecutive games.
Only two players in Spurs annals have accomplished that feat. One name makes sense (George Gervin) while the other does not (Ron Brewer).
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson was most impressed by Wembanyama’s rebounding totals, which have been a recent point of emphasis.
“He’s done a good job of trying to get rebounds outside of his area and trying to attack the basketball,” Johnson said. “The stats reflect that.”
When it comes to rebounding, Wembanyama said his intentions have not changed, even if the results have.
“It’s always a goal to grab rebounds,” said Wembanyama, who is averaging a career high 11.4 boards per game. “The most important is the defensive end. Even in my first game ever, I was trying to get rebounds. It was a physical progression first.”

San Antonio Spurs center Luke Kornet (7) defends as LA Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard (2) carries the ball at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio on Friday, March 6, 2026. The Spurs defeated the Clippers 116-112.
Kornet sits back-to-back opener: The Spurs faced the Warriors without backup center Luke Kornet, who was held out of the front end of a back-to-back with another game looming Thursday at the Los Angeles Clippers.
“If there was a way to really quantify physicality per minute, like the volume, I think he’d be pretty high up there,” Mitch Johnson said. “We wanted to try to just protect him from a back-to-back and continue to get him as healthy and as fresh as we can.”
Johnson said he was encouraged with where Kornet stands physically heading into the final two weeks of the season.
“I actually think he’s probably ahead of schedule in terms of how he’s feeling,” Johnson said, “but we want to stay diligent to the plan."
