(Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award)

Spurs’ Harrison Barnes, De’Aaron Fox finalists for NBA awards

Harrison Barnes and De’Aaron Fox are in the running for annual NBA awards that celebrate values the Spurs want their players to uphold.
The league announced Tuesday that Barnes is one of six finalists for its Sportsmanship Award and that Fox is one of 12 finalists for the Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award.

San Antonio Spurs forward Harrison Barnes (40) celebrates with center Victor Wembanyama (1) and guard De’aaron Fox (4) during the second half of an NBA basketball game against the Golden State Warriors in San Francisco, Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2026.
A 14th-year pro, Barnes is held in high regard by both teammates and opponents for his conduct on and off the court, including his willingness to give back to the community.
“Vet leadership,” Spurs rookie Dylan Harper said of the 33-year-old forward.
“You see his poise and how he stays the same all the time. He kind of just gives us his experience, however he can help. He never shies away from that. He always just wants to help.”
Said Spurs coach Mitch Johnson, “Harrison Barnes is as professional and as good of a veteran as you could want in your locker room."
The honor recognizes the player who best represents the ideals of sportsmanship on the court. The trophy is named after Joe Dumars, the Hall-of-Fame guard who won the inaugural award in 1995-96.
Each of the league’s 30 teams nominates one of its players for the award before a panel of league executives narrows the field to six finalists (one from each division). The winner will be selected by a vote of current NBA players.
Boston’s Derrick White, Indiana’s T.J. McConnell, Miami’s Bam Adebayo, Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Golden State’s Al Horford are the other finalists.

Two Spurs players have won the Sportsmanship Award: Avery Johnson in 1997-98 and David Robinson in 2000-2001.
The 28-year-old Fox, a ninth-year guard, was recently praised by Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra for sacrificing his numbers for the greater good of a team that’s loaded with other players who can score and has championship aspirations.
“I think you have to really commend Fox,” Spoelstra said. "He’s been a 25-plus point scorer for four straight years, and then sacrificing to win, he’s averaging 19 a game.
“People say, ‘Oh, you do whatever it takes to win.’ But I don’t know a lot of players who want to sign up and have their scoring average drop by seven and be great with it.”
Said Johnson, “He’s not lost a step, so it’s been a very intentional collaboration in terms of how he’s wanted to integrate himself and also make his teammates better.”
The award recognizes the player deemed the best teammate based on selfless play, on- and off-court leadership as a mentor and role model to other NBA players, and commitment and dedication to team.
The nominees, six from each conference, are selected by a panel of NBA legends. The winner is chosen by a vote of NBA players.
The other nominees are Orlando’s Desmond Bane, New York’s Jalen Brunson, Charlotte’s Pat Connaughton, Houston’s Jeff Green, Portland’s Jrue Holiday, New Orleans’ DeAndre Jordan, Detroit’s Duncan Robinson, the Los Angeles Lakers’ Marcus Smart, Boston’s Jayson Tatum, Toronto’s Garrett Temple and Oklahoma City’s Jaylin Williams.
Tim Duncan is the only Spur to have won the Twyman-Stokes Award, collecting it in 2014-15 after it was first handed out after the 2012-13 season.
Established in 2013, the award honors Hall of Famers Jack Twyman and Maurice Stokes after Twyman became legal guardian to Stokes, his paralyzed teammate.
