Spurs campaigning for Keldon Johnson to win NBA Sixth Man of the Year

San Antonio Spurs forward Keldon Johnson (3) reacts after making a three-pointer over the LA Clippers in the third quarter at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Friday, March 6, 2026. The Spurs rallied from a 25-point deficit to defeat the Clippers, winning the game 116-112.
MIAMI — Primary season, for the most part, wrapped up in Texas three weeks ago, but that doesn’t mean campaigning has come to an end in Bexar County.
The Spurs are doing plenty of it on behalf of forward Keldon Johnson.
Two days after Victor Wembanyama pushed for Johnson to win the John Havlicek Trophy as the league’s top sixth man, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson did his part after Johnson pumped in 24 points in 25 minutes to help propel the Spurs to a 134-119 win over the lowly, injury-depleted Indiana Pacers on Saturday night.
“Keldon was tremendous tonight,” Johnson said. "He had 24 points on 10-of-12 shooting. In 25 minutes, he had four assists, four rebounds and no turnovers. That’s about as efficient of a night as you can have. With that being said, we are a team with an MVP candidate (Wembanyama), multiple All-Stars (Wembanyama, De’Aaron Fox), All-Defensive NBA candidates (Wembanyama, Stephon Castle). We have (eight) guys averaging in double figures and quite recently one of our players (Wembanyama) said he (Johnson) is the heart and soul of our team.
“…For the team that he’s on and the circumstances I just laid out with the record (53-18) we have, I would be very hard pressed to find a better candidate for (NBA) Sixth Man of the Year. And I know there are some very good ones out there, but for all that production, and then for all the people that I just named that are his teammates, and every single one of them has said he’s the heart and soul of the team, I believe that is more than worthy of the sixth man (award).”
Johnson would become the first Spur to win the award since Hall of Famer Manu Ginobili did it in 2007-2008.
“He has sacrificed more than anybody on this team, in my opinion, in terms of stats and playing time,” Wembanyama said. “And he has out-shown everybody on the team, in my opinion, because he’s the soul of this team and he brings energy no matter what time of the day. He deserves to be the sixth man of the year. And a lot of the work he does, I can’t say it’s not loud because he’s naturally loud, but it’s unseen. It’s behind the scenes. He has a role nobody else wants to do. He embraces that and nobody else can do it, really.”
After Saturday’s game, rookie guard Dylan Harper, who also had 24 points, called Johnson the “glue to this team.”
“He a thousand percent deserves sixth man of the year just because of all the hard work he put in,” Harper said. “That’s a guy who was averaging 20 (points) before everyone got here. So just for him to take that backseat and embrace the (bench) role, and he’s dominating his role, I think he’s better at it than anyone else in the NBA.”
Spurs’ depth allows starters to rest
Mitch Johnson said he thinks it’s “logical” to assume the Spurs might rest a few more banged-up players like they did Saturday night when Devin Vassell was a late scratch due to a minor hamstring issue.
The coach added that the solid play of Lindy Waters III and Jordan McLaughlin give the Spurs that luxury.
“We’ve had some guys that have played through stuff and, in addition, we’ve had some health and some chemistry and some growth in other areas,” Johnson said. “Lindy Waters and Jordan McLaughlin played 35 minutes tonight of really, really sharp basketball. And so that gives you even more confidence as a team, an organization, as a coach, that if guys aren’t at their best, we can (rest them).”
McLaughlin had six points powered by 2-of-3 shooting from beyond the arc, three assists and two steals in 18 minutes. Waters also hit 2 of 3 from deep on his way to six points, two assists and a rebound in 17 minutes.
In addition to Vassell, the Spurs played without Stephon Castle, who missed his second game in a row with tightness in his right hip.
Wembanyama, who was listed as questionable with a sore right ankle, had 20 points, eight rebounds, six assists and five blocks in 26 minutes after getting the green light to play from the medical staff after he warmed up.
