AUSTIN — Spurs forward Keldon Johnson said there’s “no pressure” on him to win the John Havlicek Trophy as the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year because it’s far from his main goal this season.
“The number one thing on my mind, for my team, my coaches, is winning,” Johnson said. “So, my objective every day is to come out here and put my teammates in the best position to be successful and try to (impact) winning as much as possible.”
Johnson entered the All-Star break last week averaging 13.5 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists while shooting a team-best 38% from 3-point range on 3.2 attempts per game.
Those numbers are great and he’s glad to be in the conversation for Sixth Man of the Year, but what matters most to him are achieving team goals, including gaining the No. 1 seed in the West.
If that happens, the odds of Johnson winning the Havlicek Trophy would increase considerably.
The Spurs (38-16) enter Thursday’s game against Phoenix at Moody Center just three games behind Oklahoma City (42-14) in the Western Conference standings after winning six in a row.
“I come out and do the same thing every night, and that’s bring energy,” Johnson said. “I can’t guarantee you what will come with that, but I know I will go out there and do my job. Whatever comes with that is great.”
