3 takeaways as Spurs beat Pacers in Dylan Harper’s starting debut

Seventeen minutes. That’s how long Spurs guard Dylan Harper had to prepare for his first NBA start.
With Devin Vassell a late scratch after pre-game warm-ups Saturday, Harper found out not long before tipoff that he would be making his starting debut against Indiana.
He admits he was nervous. For the next 17 minutes.
“The ball just had to go up,” Harper said.
Harper came up big in his inaugural NBA start, scoring 24 points to help lead the Spurs past the hapless Pacers 134-119 at the Frost Bank Center.
Keldon Johnson added 24 points off the bench for the Spurs, while Victor Wembanyama eased his way to a 20-point night that included eight rebounds, six assists and five blocked shots.

The Pacers came into Saturday’s contest with 14 players listed as either “out” or “questionable” on the injury report.
Somehow Indiana figured out a way to field a full team, just in time to lose its 16th game in a row.
Andrew Nembhard put up 25 points for the Pacers, while Jarace Walker added 21.
The game was never really a game after the Spurs built a lead in the first half that got as high as 21 points.
The Spurs’ victory was their 21st in the past 23 games, and improved their record to 53-18.
Here are three takeaways as the Spurs next head out on a three-game road swing beginning Monday in Miami:
1. Expect more robust injury reports to come
Coach Mitch Johnson called Vassell’s late addition to the injured list precautionary. Same with Stephon Castle, who missed his second game in a row with hip tightness.
With the playoffs already sewn up, expect more of these sorts of DNPs among rotation players to come for two reasons.
No. 1 — It makes sense to try and keep banged-up players fresh heading into the postseason.
No. 2 — The Spurs have enough veteran depth to survive a night like Saturday with rotation pieces sidelined and win anyway.
Backup guard Jordan McLaughlin provided 18 quality minutes and threw in a couple of 3-pointers, as did Lindy Waters II.
If the choice is to let those players eat minutes or push other rotation players to play through bumps and bruises, the Spurs have evolved to the point in which the former is the easy choice.

2. Harper steady in starting debut
Harper made the most of his first NBA start, turning in his seventh 20-point game of the season and equaling his season high. Certainly, not everything was perfect.
Harper committed four fouls, and — as Mitch Johnson noted — was beaten backdoor for layups by Nembhard on a pair of occasions.
All in all, however, the 20-year-old Harper acquitted himself well in his inaugural start.
On the kind of team that normally winds up with the No. 2 overall pick — read: bad ones — Harper would likely be an every night starter putting up gaudier numbers and making a Rookie of the Year case.
On the second-best team in the Western Conference, Harper has been a star substitute.
Talent-wise, Harper projects as an NBA starter. With Fox and Castle ahead of him on the Spurs’ depth chart, he will have to wait his turn.

3. Is the NBA underselling Keldon Johnson as a Sixth Man candidate?
The Spurs would not have won going away Saturday if not for Keldon Johnson’s contributions.
The 26-year-old forward led the Spurs in scoring off the bench for the fifth time this season, went 10 of 12 from the field and committed zero turnovers.
At the rare moments in which the Pacers seemed poised to make a rare run, Johnson gave them life.
Late in the second quarter, for instance, Johnson scored driving baskets on eight consecutive possessions to push the Spurs ahead by 20.
Johnson has been stellar off the bench for the bulk of his seventh NBA campaign, begging the question: Why isn’t he getting more Sixth Man of the Year love?
Consensus around the league seems to peg Miami’s Jaime Jaquez or Minnesota’s Naz Reid as the favorites for the award, with Johnson in a tier below that.
After nights like Saturday, however, Johnson like he is being undersold in the Sixth Man race.
