Minutes after Victor Wembanyama’s last-second 17-footer delivered the Spurs a stirring 101-100 victory over Phoenix on Thursday, forward Keldon Johnson grabbed a microphone courtside to address fans still celebrating inside the Frost Bank Center.
He had nothing planned. No notes prepared.
“I didn’t even know what I was going to say,” Johnson said. “I just knew we needed to get on the mic.”
He settled on leading an 18,000-person MVP chant for the man of the hour.
Wembanyama scored 34 points with 12 rebounds and three steals to lead the Spurs to the victory, which in turn cemented the club’s first postseason bid since 2019.
His 17-foot jumper over Phoenix’s Oso Ighodaro with 1.1 seconds remaining sealed the game and the playoff berth. Afterward, Johnson wanted to make sure the world knew who was most responsible for snapping the Spurs’ drought. He practically screamed it from a mountaintop.
“I’ll be the one to go out there and say what needs to be said,” Johnson said. “Victor Wembanyama, MVP.”
Despite a standout third NBA campaign, Wembanyama is considered a dark-horse challenger to Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who remains favored to claim his second consecutive MVP award.
Heading into Saturday’s home game against Indiana, Wembanyama is averaging 24.3 points, 11.1 rebounds and a league-high three blocks per game, leading the Spurs to a 52-18 mark that is second in the NBA to the Thunder.
Assuming he finishes with the required 65 games played, Wembanyama is considered a lock for his first Defensive Player of the Year and All-NBA honors.
“He deserves his flowers,” Johnson said. “He’s playing at that type of level. He’s been our guy on and off the court.”
