Wembanyama’s jumper lifts Spurs past Suns and into playoffs

San Antonio Spurs guard Jordan McLaughlin (0) dunks the ball at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Thursday, March 19, 2026.
A sellout crowd of 18,646 packed the Frost Bank Center on Thursday in hopes of seeing the Spurs clinch their first playoff berth in seven years.
Fittingly, Victor Wembanyama gave the San Antonio faithful its moment.
Wembanyama hit the game-winning jumper with 1.1 seconds to play to lift the Spurs to a 101-100 victory over the Phoenix Suns that was every bit as difficult as the final score indicated.
In doing so, Wembanyama officially and mathematically punched the Spurs’ ticket to the postseason dance.
At 52-18, the worst the Spurs can finish is sixth place in the Western Conference, enough to sew up a playoff berth outright. With a hefty lead for second place, they have their sights set higher than that.
Wembanyama, whose arrival as the Spurs’ No. 1 draft pick in 2023 signaled the beginning of a long journey back to the postseason, did most of the heavy lifting.
He finished with 34 points, 12 rebounds and three steals to help the Spurs pull out the victory.
De’Aaron Fox shook off a slow start to end with 23 points, while Julian Champagnie chipped in 14, including four 3-pointers.
Collin Gillespie scored 24 points for the Suns, going 6 of 11 from 3-point range, while All-Star guard Devin Booker needed 22 attempts to get to 22 points.
The Spurs had led for all of 44 seconds of the second half when the ball found Wembanyama out of a timeout with 10.4 seconds to go.
The Spurs were behind by a point.
Wembanyama dribbled the ball for nine seconds, signaling his intention to take the final shots.
Eventually, he rose for 17-footer over Oso Ighodaro to secure the Spurs’ most important win of the season.
Those 18,646 went delirious, as did the Spurs themselves.
Here are three takeaways from Thursday’s victory, which delivered the Spurs to their first playoff series since 2019:
1. How is this for a playoff matchup?
Phoenix fell to 39-31 with the loss, remaining in seventh place in the conference. If the season ended today and the play-in tournament goes to chalk, it would be Spurs and Suns in the first round.
The matchup would be an interesting one to say the least.
Had it not been for the final 1.1 seconds Thursday, the Suns would have been the first team in the NBA to defeat the Spurs three times this season.
None of the matchups came with both teams at full strength.
Wembanyama and Fox missed a game apiece during the Spurs’ two losses earlier this season. Stephon Castle was out Thursday with a hip ailment.
Phoenix was without a slew of rotation players — Dillon Brooks, Royce O’Neale, Grayson Allen, Haywood Highsmith and Mark Williams.
Brooks also missed the Spurs’ victory in Austin in February.
Given the flux state of the lineups in the matchups, it’s difficult to draw a whole lot from the regular-season series should the teams meet in the postseason
Except for this: The Suns will play hard, and they will make a series of it.

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) is guarded by Phoenix Suns forward Oso Ighodaro (11) at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Thursday, March 19, 2026. The Spurs won in the last second, 101-100.
2. Fox picks up slack with Castle out (eventually)
Castle was a late scratch after his hip flared up during warm-ups. It took Fox three quarters, but he eventually picked up the slack in the Spurs’ backcourt.
Up until the fourth, Fox struggled, going 3 of 11 for 10 points with four turnovers.
The final frame was Fox’s time to shine.
He scored 13 of his points in the fourth, making five of six shots. Just as important, Fox notched no turnovers.
The Spurs traded for Fox last season with these moments in mind. The former NBA Clutch Player of the Year came up big when it counted.
3. Spurs’ scouting pays off at the end
Wembanyama would not have had a chance to hit the game-winner if not for what happened on the Spurs’ previous defensive possession.
With the Suns ahead 100-99, the Spurs trapped every Phoenix player who touched the ball, forcing a timeout.
Coming out of that timeout, the Spurs were able to funnel the Suns’ inbounds pass to forward Rasheer Fleming.
This is notable, because Fleming is a 57% foul shooter.
Wembanyama fouled Fleming immediately, sending the Suns not-so-sharpshooter to the free throw line with 11.1 seconds left.
Fleming produced an even worse outcome than his average and missed both.
That set the stage for the first game-winner of Wembanyama’s career.
