Image

The Atlanta Hawks rolled to their 11th straight victory in Dallas on Wednesday, likely eliciting a few choice curse words in the Spurs’ front office.

Atlanta has suddenly become the hottest team in the NBA at the worst possible moment for the Spurs.

How’s that?

Thanks to the 2022 Dejounte Murray trade, the Spurs have the right to swap first-round picks with Atlanta this season. The Hawks’ refusal to lose has improved their record to 38-31, tied with Miami for seventh in the Eastern Conference and all but assured a spot in the play-in tournament.

Suddenly, a pick that a month ago with a little lottery luck could have netted the Spurs their fourth-straight top-5 selection seems a tad less enticing.

If the season ended today, and assuming Atlanta makes the Eastern Conference playoffs via the play-in tournament, the Hawks’ pick would be No. 16.

A bit of a letdown, for sure.

Still, a first-round pick is a first-round pick — and the Spurs still could find themselves with a few balls in the lottery drawing should the Hawks fail to make it out of the play-in.

With the NCAA tournament set to begin in earnest Thursday, here is a Spurs fan’s guide to March Madness, highlighting a few prospects who might be available in the late lottery or later come June:

Image
Florida’s Micah Handlogten (3) and Thomas Haugh (10) fight for a rebound with Houston’s Joseph Tugler (11) during the second half of the Men’s NCAA Final Four game at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Monday, April 7, 2025. Florida Gators won the championship 65-63 against the Houston Cougars.

1. Thomas Haugh, F, Florida

A 6-foot-9 junior, Haugh has been a standout for the Gators as they eye a national championship repeat. Steady and dependable in the Florida frontcourt, the 22-year-old plays hard, wins 50-50 balls and boasts an improving 3-point shot.

With one national title already under his belt, Haugh comes with the type of winning pedigree the Spurs covet.

Haugh does not project as a star at the next level, but could fit quickly around a group that already has its star, which makes him a perfect match for a team like Victor Wembanyama’s Spurs.

2. Braylon Mullins, SG, Connecticut

One of the Spurs’ goals in the offseason will be to add more shooters to the mix and Mullins fits the bill.

After a slow start to his college campaign marred by an ankle injury, the 6-foot-6 freshman made 41% of his 3-point shots during Big East play.

Mullins would be a sure-fire lottery pick were he to play another season at UConn. If he enters the 2026 draft, he could be a steal in the middle of the first round.

First round: vs. 15-seed Furman, 9 p.m. Friday, TBS

Michigan’s Yaxel Lendeborg, left, goes up to the basket against Illinois’ Keaton Wagler, right, during the second half of an NCAA college basketball game Friday, Feb. 27, 2026, in Champaign, Ill. (AP Photo/Craig Pessman)

3. Yaxel Lendeborg, F/C, Michigan

Lendeborg will turn 24 before the end of his first NBA training camp, making him one of the older prospects in this year’s draft.

The team that tabs the Michigan big man will certainly know what it is getting.

Armed with a 7-foot-4 wingspan, Lendeborg is one of the best defensive players in this year’s draft crop, with the ability to defend multiple positions.

With Wembanyama and Luke Kornet in house, the Spurs are well-stocked when it comes to defensive big men. A team can never have too many of those, however.

First round: vs. 16-seed Howard, 6:10 p.m. Thursday, KENS5

Image

4. Brayden Burries, SG, Arizona

In the hunt for sharpshooters, Burries is another name to add to the list. Though a bit undersized for modern NBA backcourts at 6-4, Burries has proven to be an adept catch-and-shoot 3-point gunner.

A year ago, the Spurs used one of Atlanta’s picks to select Carter Bryant out of Arizona at No. 14.

If they go back to the Wildcats well again this June, Burries could be the pick.

First round: vs. 16-seed Long Island University, 12:35 p.m. Friday, TNT

Image
Texas center Matas Vokietaitis (8) has his shot blocked by Tennessee forward Nate Ament (10) and center Felix Okpara (34) during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026, in Knoxville, Tenn.?

5. Nate Ament, F, Tennessee

Ament is the one player on this list who might not play a single minute of the NCAA tournament. The star freshman was highly rated entering the season, but started slow and then injured his leg in a Feb. 28 game against Alabama.

He has not played since. Ament averaged 19 points in 16 SEC games before injury, flashing the scoring promise that intrigues NBA scouts.

Even if Ament does not play another game at Tennessee, he still might be a top-10 pick.

First round: vs. 11-seed Miami (OH), 3:25 p.m. Friday, TBS

Arizona’s Koa Peat (10) heads to the basket as Houston’s Joseph Tugler (11) defends during the second half of an NCAA college basketball game in the championship of the Big 12 Conference tournament Saturday, March 14, 2026, in Kansas City, Mo. (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel)

6. Koa Peat, F/C, Arizona

The NBA jury is still out on the muscular Wildcats forward. Scouts love Peat’s physical, no-holds-barred style of play. He is a player unafraid of the dirty work who does not need the ball in his hands to impact a game.

Peat is also undersized for an NBA frontcourt at 6-8 and is working with a below-average jump shot.

He is a prospect who could help his stock with a big tournament.

First round: vs. 16-seed LIU, 12:35 p.m. Friday, TNT

Image
Iowa guard Bennett Stirtz (14) shoots over Nebraska guard Sam Hoiberg (1) during the second half of an NCAA college basketball game, Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2026, in Iowa City, Iowa. (AP Photo/Charlie Neibergall)

7. Bennett Stirtz, PG, Iowa

Yes, yes. The Spurs’ backcourt is overstocked with point guards — so much so that last year’s No. 2 overall pick, Dylan Harper, is forced to come off the bench.

Drafting a player like Stirtz would be a move meant to stock the cupboard for the future. The 6-foot-4 senior has been a driving force for the Hawkeyes this season, averaging 20.2 points and hitting better than 40% from 3-point range.

Stirtz enters the NCAA tournament riding a string of seven consecutive 20-point contests.

His lack of foot speed will make him a defensive target in the NBA, but front offices will be hard-pressed to find a better shooter in this year’s draft class.

First round: vs. 8-seed Clemson, 5:50 p.m. Friday, TNT

Image
Houston’s Kingston Flemings, left, grabs a rebound as BYU’s Kennard Davis Jr. watches during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game in the quarterfinal round of the Big 12 Conference tournament Thursday, March 12, 2026, in Kansas City, Mo. (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel)

8. Kingston Flemings, PG, Houston

Let’s get this out of the way: The Spurs would have to majorly hit some of their patented lottery luck for a chance to select Flemings.

The 19-year-old Cougars standout is projected to be a top-5 pick. The Spurs can’t get there without divine intervention. A 2025 graduate of Brennan High School, Flemings landing with his hometown NBA team would be a turn of events too good to ignore.

Even though chances of San Antonio’s native son coming home are slim, Spurs fans would be well advised to make Flemings and the Cougars a part of their NCAA tournament viewing plans.
