Wembanyama must play in 13 of San Antonio’s final 16 games for end-of-season award eligibility. The NBA requires players to play at least 20 minutes for 65 games during the 82-game regular season.

Wembanyama has played in 51 games this season. He is credited with a 52nd game after playing in the NBA Cup Final, which does not count toward the regular-season standings or statistics, but is part of the 65-game requirement.

The Spurs will be without Victor Wembanyama when they host the Denver Nuggets on Thursday night.

The Spurs ruled out Wembanyama after he tested his sore right ankle during warmups.

After Thursday, Wembanyama can miss only three more games to maintain his eligibility for end-of-season awards. The 22-year-old Frenchman is in the running for the league’s most valuable player award, defensive player of the year and a spot on the All-NBA team.

Wembanyama had played in 30 consecutive games, the longest such streak of his career.

Wembanyama last missed a game on Jan. 3, when the Spurs lost 115-110 to Portland at the Frost Bank Center. It was the second game in a row he sat out with a knee injury.

Wembanyama also missed 12 games in a row between Nov. 16 and Dec. 10 with a calf injury.

The Spurs are 10-4 without Wembanyama.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said during his pre-game news conference he expected Wembanyama to “push to play.” Asked how the decision would be made, Johnson said, “Kind of how we always have. I know that the timing is different now (this late in the season), but yeah, we’ll be mindful of all of it. And I think, fortunately, regardless, this is something we’ve used as very short term. So it’s as much of how he’s feeling versus risk of bigger picture.”

The Spurs also announced Harrison Barnes (ankle) and Lindy Waters (illness) have been upgraded to active.

Wembanyama popped up on the injury report late Wednesday afternoon after finishing Tuesday night’s 125-116 win over Boston with 39 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal in 37 minutes.

Luke Kornet is expected to replace Wembanyama in the starting lineup.

The Spurs are 48-17 after winning five straight and 16 of their last 17 games. The Nuggets (39-26) host Houston on Wednesday night before flying to San Antonio.
