Spurs coach Mitch Johnson was non-committal when asked about the status of Victor Wembanyama for Friday night’s game against Dallas.
The Spurs downgraded Wembanyama from doubtful to out for Wednesday’s game against Portland after he suffered a bruised left rib in the second period of Monday’s 115-102 win over Philadelphia.
The Spurs are confident Wembanyama will play at least 20 minutes in one of the two remaining regular season games to qualify for NBA regular season awards, but Johnson said he’s “not sure” if the 22-year-old Frenchman will play against the Mavericks.
Wembanyama is a candidate for league MVP and the overwhelming favorite to win defensive player of the year.
If Wembanyama doesn’t play against Dallas, his last chance to hit the league’s 65-game threshold for awards will be on Sunday night when the Spurs host Denver in the regular season finale.
Johnson discussed Wembanyama’s health with reporters before Wednesday’s game.
“He’s improved quite a bit, so I don’t think it’s a long-term concern, but we’ll obviously be very cautious in the situation and circumstances we’re under,” Johnson said.
Asked if Wembanyama might be limited to 20 minutes against Dallas or Denver, Johnson said, “Haven’t got that far, but he is improving and, yeah, we’ll just kind of take it day by day and see how it goes. It won’t be 45 (minutes).”
