AUSTIN — The Spurs honored former coach Doug Moe with a moment of silence before Thursday’s 121-94 win over Phoenix before a sellout crowd of 16,258 at Moody Center.
Moe, who died Tuesday at age 87 in hospice care after an illness, was the Spurs’ first NBA coach, guiding the franchise for three-plus seasons beginning with the 1976-77 season following the ABA-NBA merger. He ranks second in club history in games coached (312) and wins (177) behind Gregg Popovich, the NBA’s all-time winningest coach.
Moe led the Spurs to the 1979 Eastern Conference Finals, where they lost in seven games to the Washington Bullets (now the Wizards).
The Spurs also paid tribute to Moe by posting a statement on X.
“We are saddened by the passing of Doug Moe, who served as head coach of the Spurs from 1976-80. Our thoughts go out to his family during this time,” the Spurs said.
