Former Spurs point guard Chris Paul announced his retirement Friday after he was waived by the Toronto Raptors a week after they acquired him in a trade with the Los Angeles Clippers.
Paul made the announcement in a post on his Instagram account.
“I’m filled with so much joy and gratitude,” Paul said. “While this chapter of being an ‘NBA player’ is done, the game of basketball will forever be engrained in the DNA of my life.”
Paul, an 11-time All-NBA selection and 12-time All-Star, ranks second in NBA history with 12,552 assists and 2,728 steals. He averaged 16.8 points, 9.2 assists and 2.0 steals per game in his 21-year career. He led the NBA in assists per game five times and steals per game six times, though he hasn’t made All-NBA or an All-Star Game since 2022.
