Mitch Johnson explains why the Spurs parted ways with Jeremy Sochan

San Antonio Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan (10) battles for the ball with Orlando Magic guard Cole Anthony (50) during the first half of their NBA preseason game at the Frost Bank Center on Wednesday, Oct 9, 2024. San Antonio beat Orlando 107-97.
The Spurs on Wednesday bid a fond farewell to now former teammate Jeremy Sochan, who has agreed to a contract buyout after the team failed in its bid to move him before last week’s trade deadline.
The 22-year-old Sochan is expected to sign a league-minimum deal with the New York Knicks once he clears waivers, according to the New York Post. That would set up a reunion with Sochan’s old team March 1 at Madison Square Garden.
“We were all very aware of his desire to be in the rotation and given more of an opportunity, especially recently,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “We wanted to do right by him and make sure he had that opportunity before the year was over.”
Sochan’s departure marks an unceremonious closing chapter for the Spurs’ ill-fated 2022 draft class.
The team had three first-round picks that season, using them on Sochan at No. 9, Malaki Branham at No. 20 and Blake Wesley at No. 25.
None of those players remain with the team.
In a post on his social media accounts Thursday, Sochan offered a heartfelt goodbye.
“I’ve moved around a lot throughout my life and this is the longest I’ve been in the same place since I was 15 years old,” Sochan wrote in part. “I’ll always have love for San Antonio! Everything happens for a reason (and) time will tell.”
