INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Always-confident Spurs rookie guard Dylan Harper never feared the so-called rookie wall because he never believed in it.
“I think that wall is imaginary,” he said.
Perhaps. But Harper, who the Spurs selected second overall in last June’s draft, ran headfirst into something last month when his scoring and efficiency numbers nosedived.
He viewed the decline, though, as part and parcel of being an NBA player, an annoyance not limited just to first-year pros like himself.
“A lot of people hit it, not just rookies,” Harper, 19, said. “Everyone hits a wall at some point. Being in this league, you hear a lot of people talk about the dog days of the NBA. You just have to stay the course.”
Whatever the case may be, he arrived in Los Angeles on Thursday for his busy All-Star weekend on a roll after coming off a strong stretch that made his dip in production in January a distant memory. With Harper back in form as a significant bench contributor, the Spurs have won six in a row, the NBA’s longest current winning streak.
After recording just 7.6 points, 2.6 steals and 3.1 rebounds while shooting 38.4% from the field and 21.6% from 3-point range during a 14-game period from Dec. 31 through Jan. 25, Harper is averaging 14.3 points, 4.4 assists and 4.0 rebounds over his last seven games while shooting 62.3% from the floor and 31.3% from distance. Those numbers are more in line with his stats from his first 16 games, when he averaged 13.8 points, 3.6 assists and 3.3 rebounds while shooting 47.8% and 30.2%.
The Rutgers alumnus traveled with the rest of the team’s All-Star crew from San Francisco to L.A. after helping the Spurs post a 126-113 come-from-behind win over Golden State by posting 14 points on 6-of-10 from the field, eight assists and five rebounds in 29 minutes. It was his second game with 15-plus points and 5-plus assists while shooting 75%, making him the NBA record holder for such games by a teenager.
Harper’s recovery from his January swoon underscores the belief expressed by Spurs coach Mitch Johnson’s during that slump that the youngster would be just fine.
"We we all saw him play at the start of the year and said it felt like he’d been in the league for seven years,” Johnson said. “He had a rough patch, and everybody wants to know what’s wrong with him.”
For the season, Harper is averaging 10.9 points to rank 10th among NBA rookies and first among rookies who have yet to start a game to go along with 3.7 assists and 3.4 rebounds.
Per 36 minutes, it’s 18.1 points, 6.1 assists and 5.6 boards.
“He’s really getting confident and comfortable in the league,” Spurs guard Devin Vassell said. “He went through a stretch where maybe he just wasn’t himself. He wasn’t mentally wherever he is at now. But right now he’s turned that corner and he’s being ultra-aggressive. That’s what we need from him.”
Said Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox, “Dylan’s been great. When he’s out there, he seems like a vet playing.”
Now Harper is ready to tackle a heavy workload at NBA All-Star Weekend with his appearance in the Rising Stars mini-tournament on Friday night followed by Saturday night’s Shooting Stars competition in which he’ll be teamed with his brother Ron Harper Jr. of the Boston Celtics and his father Ron Harper, who finished his 15-year NBA career after the 2000-2001 season with five championships.
The Rising Stars event features four teams comprised of rookies, sophomores and G Leaguers. Harper is a member of Team Carmelo (coached by former Hall of Famer Carmelo Anthony) along with the Spurs’ Stephon Castle, who bounced back from the pelvic bruise he suffered in Tuesday’s win at the Los Angeles Lakers to finish with eight points and four assists in 21 minutes against the Warriors.
Harper’s coach and teammates from the Spurs are confident he can handle all of his All-Star obligations without a hitch. As they’ve pointed out all season long, he’s mature beyond his years.
“His poise and his composure,” Johnson said when asked what impresses him most about the native of New Jersey.
“He doesn’t change his body language, facial expressions,” the coach added. “He just plays the game. And to be able to do that at his age with the lack of experience and on the job training at this level he’s had is very impressive. It allows him to move from a play that might not have gone his way or even a mistake he may make onto the next thing and make a play very quickly because he is so talented and so capable. That’s probably what’s most impressive.”
