Spurs center Victor Wemabanyama stands behind the Spurs front office’s decision to stand pat at the NBA trade deadline.
“If there’s any message to be taken from it, it’s that we trust who we are,” Wembanyama said.
There were 28 trades consummated in the week leading to Thursday’s deadline. Eighteen of them were triggered on deadline day itself, a league record.
The Spurs joined in none of the fun, becoming one of three teams in the NBA to decline to make a deal. Houston and Miami are the others.
In doing so, the Spurs front office opted to hold steady with the roster that has posted a 35-16 record heading into Saturday’s home game against Dallas, good for second in the Western Conference.
The Spurs have posted one more win through this point of this season than they did throughout the entire 2024-25 campaign, which the Spurs finished 34-48.
That is fine with the most important voice in the franchise.
“What I love is that the front office trusts these guys just like I do," Wembanyama said. "We’re on the same page.”
Indeed, news of the Spurs’ inactivity at the trade deadline was met with relief in throughout team’s locker room after Thursday’s 135-123 victory over the Dallas Mavericks at American Airlines Center.
“It feels good,” guard Stephon Castle said, “just to be connected and have the same team we started with for the rest of the season.”
That is a different feeling from last season, when the Spurs landed All-Star guard De’Aaron Fox at the deadline.
That move was met with rave reviews among the Spurs, even as the team lost a pair of mainstays in the deal in the form of Tre Jones and Zach Collins.
This year, the Spurs are eager to continue a playoff push with the roster they have.
“When you’re in a situation where you’re winning games, you don’t feel like you have to make a lot of moves,” veteran forward Harrison Barnes said. “We’re happy to live with that and continue to build with that.”
