28分 | 16篮板 | 5盖帽 pic.twitter.com/6JVAhS5qWB

— San Antonio Spurs (@ spurs) January 29, 2026

— OKC THUNDER (@ okcthunder) January 26, 2026

On Friday, the Detroit Pistons rev their East-leading turbo engine against Stephen Curry on ESPN. The incomparable Victor Wembanyama continues his league siege, facing the slow-buzz Charlotte Hornets for Prime’s Saturday afternoon spot. ABC also has its Saturday night showcase, which pairs Kevin Durant’s Houston Rockets with Cooper Flagg’s Dallas Mavericks. And the NBC Sunday two-piece is a smash — buckets abound from Midtown Manhattan to the Rocky Mountains.

Here’s what to look forward to, and a few trade deadline crossovers to throw it back. Follow The Athletic’s rolling coverage of the 2025-26 deadline right here.

Friday

Toronto Raptors at Orlando Magic

The last three head-to-head meetings go like this: one-point Raptors win (Dec. 29), one-point Raptors win (last March), two-point Raptors win (last March as well). Toronto and Orlando know how to boogie. Paolo Banchero posted an efficient triple-double in that prior matchup, with just one turnover to his 10 assists. But the Raps launched a thrilling rally out of their 21-point hole.

As of Thursday, Scottie Barnes and the Canadian crew average more fast-break scoring than any other team. The Magic counter with a modest turnover rate, eighth-lowest through 46 games. Another ultra-narrow finish wouldn’t be surprising.

Trade deadline history (2017): Serge Ibaka to the Raptors, Terrence Ross and a first-round draft pick to the Magic. Ibaka won a title with Toronto, while Ross had a productive seven-year run as Orlando’s bench bucket. The 2017 pick became Anžejs Pasečņiks, an NBA afterthought.

Detroit Pistons at Golden State Warriors

Detroit is hitting its city trademarks as its Pistons cruise atop the conference. Cade Cunningham has the Motown rhythm — his recent Player of the Month highlight reel plays like “The Temptin’ Temptations.” Jalen Duren and Isaiah Stewart fashion the inside like the Monument to Joe Lewis.

As a whole, the Pistons hoop with industrious, “Bad Boys”-style hustle. They’re No. 1 in blocks and steals per game through Thursday. They’re second in net rating, paint points and pass deflections. Proud Michigander Draymond Green should be pumped up for this one. Let’s appreciate all the Steph Curry showings we can get, even if his Warriors have wandered down the West table.

Trade deadline history (2025): The two were in last year’s five-team deal that starred Jimmy Butler. Golden State landed the headliner; Detroit was compensated for its facilitation with Dennis Schröder and Lindy Waters III. Both players then went elsewhere in the offseason.

Saturday

San Antonio Spurs at Charlotte Hornets

The Hornets are trending up, with 10 wins in their first 16 games since the New Year. Kon Knueppel has balled out far beyond rookie expectation, averaging nearly 19 points per game and close to 50/40/90 shooting splits and coming off a career-high 34-point performance. Charlotte has the heart to hang with San Antonio, tough as the Spurs look right now. That said, we know why we’re watching this afternoon action:

An Alien kind of night :alien:

28 PTS | 16 REB | 5 BLK pic.twitter.com/6JVAhS5qWB

— San Antonio Spurs (@ spurs) January 29, 2026

Wemby can make a weekend. His 28-point, 16-rebound, five-block effort on Wednesday felt casual, 180-degree transition dunk included.

Trade deadline history (2010): Then doing business as the Bobcats, Charlotte spent a conditional second-rounder on 36-year-old Theo Ratliff. He made fill-in starts at center amid the rare Bobcats playoff push.

Dallas Mavericks at Houston Rockets

A Lone Star link-up puts the prodigy versus the prototype. Flagg is basketball’s latest stretch talent, 6-foot-9 with fleetness and an on-ball bag. It’s rewarding to see the 19-year-old unlock powers in real time — 19.5 points, 4.1 assists, 2.1 stocks (steals+blocks) per night.

Durant, 6-foot-11 (height varying by audience), traced the smooth three-level approach we now recognize as modern offense. He has reached the 30-point threshold 18 times so far this season, truly remarkable for an 18th-year pro. Houston has real NBA Finals aspirations. The stretchable length of Durant, Amen Thompson and Alperen Şengün make for entertaining lineups. Dallas is a deadline domino, with Anthony Davis on the shelf and Naji Marshall on the market.

“Inside the NBA” holds down intermissions. The “NBA Saturday Primetime on ABC” lead booth has Mike Breen on play-by-play and Tim Legler for analysis, with Lisa Salters on sideline duty. Breen and Legler were rerouted from last Saturday’s assignment in Dallas due to snowstorms around Texas.

Trade deadline history (1995): Scott Brooks got shipped from Houston between halves of a Rockets game. He was informed on the court during halftime warmups (!). Thus began the informal Scott Brooks Rule, which says no one should be traded mid-game on deadline day. Dallas sent out fellow backup PG Morlon Wiley … who didn’t play a single minute for Houston.

Sunday

Milwaukee Bucks at Boston Celtics

An inaugural “NBA Pioneers Classic” starts Black History Month and celebrates the league’s earliest barrier-breakers from 75 years ago. Chuck Cooper, Nathaniel Clifton and Earl Lloyd each debuted in 1950. Cooper was the first Black draft pick, “Sweetwater” Clifton was the first to sign an NBA contract, and Lloyd was the first to play as he suited up for the Washington Capitols.

The game itself has a lot of polarity. Boston is fully stabilized after its sluggish opening, and the Celtics are nearing a No. 1 offensive rating behind Jaylen Brown’s career-best output. Milwaukee is absolutely flailing, as Doc Rivers teams do when the end is near. Giannis Antetokounmpo trade winds are spinning the deer to a new frontier.

Trade deadline history: None. There are seven head-to-head trades overall, but radio silence around the deadlines.

Los Angeles Lakers at New York Knicks

This is the easiest sell to the national viewership. It’s LeBron James, waxing nostalgic on his marathon stardom, in the Broadway-style lighting of Madison Square Garden. It’s Jalen Brunson, reigning Clutch Player of the Year, welcoming the NBA glamour franchise to “Roundball Rock.” It’s the one-year anniversary of the Luka Dončić trade, which the Lakers learned of during last year’s MSG trip. Los Angeles and New York are both in the market for a midseason add, and this matchup should set the tone for a consequential February.

Mike Tirico takes the call, alongside former Knicks sixth man Jamal Crawford and eternal Knicks enemy Reggie Miller. This game launches NBC’s “Sunday Night Basketball” format. It’s like “Sunday Night Football,” but … basketball. There’s even a “Basketball Night in America” pregame show. Caitlin Clark is joining that program as a guest contributor. Knicks great Carmelo Anthony is locked in as a studio regular.

Trade deadline history: Also none. Hey, both sides could get active in the week to come.

Oklahoma City Thunder at Denver Nuggets

Fans have been patiently waiting for Nikola Jokić. Denver’s mountain in the middle is recovering from his Dec. 29 knee injury, and per ESPN’s Shams Charania, he hopes to return to the Nuggets on Friday.. The Joker-less lineup has remained in the mix due to Jamal Murray hero ball and a Peyton Watson power-up.

Jokić would face a tough acclimation assignment in OKC. The defending champions are first in defensive rating, first in point differential and first in soul-flattening denials:

We’ll take a large steal and slam combo :head_shaking_vertically: pic.twitter.com/BUaN6xc1kE

— OKC THUNDER (@ okcthunder) January 26, 2026

Noah Eagle and Grant Hill are narrators for what should be fast-flowing basketball.

Trade deadline history (2016): OKC packaged D.J. Augustin, Steve Novak and two late picks to add Randy Foye. That move upgraded the team’s guard depth, plus got payroll below the luxury tax. The Thunder went on to the Western Conference finals, where “Game 6 Klay” Thompson broke their hearts.
