How the Spurs slowed down Bucks All-Star Giannis Antetokounmpo

San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle (5) guards Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo (34) during the third quarter at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Thursday, Jan. 15, 2026. The Spurs defeated the Bucks, 119-109.

A change in their defensive strategy against Giannis Antetokounmpo helped the Spurs slow down “The Greek Freak” in Thursday’s 119-101 home win over Milwaukee.

“He’s so aggressive, so relentless, such a battering ram, and I mean that complimentary,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said of the two-time league MVP. “You can put a small on him and try to have more rim protection or you can put more size on him and try to have resistance early. Neither really has worked over time, but we just changed it up and Steph (Castle) did a great job.”

The Spurs started out with Victor Wembanyama defending Antetokounmpo, but they called on Castle to do the job after the Frenchman exited the game early in the first quarter after bumping knees with Antetokounmpo.

Wembanyama returned at the start of the second period, but Castle continued to be the primary defender against the nine-time All-Star.

Antetokounmpo finished with 21 points in three quarters — he didn’t play in the fourth with the Spurs leading by nearly 40 at the start of it — after scoring 14 in the first. He came into the game averaging 29.1 points for the season and 39.5 over his last two games on the road against the Spurs.

Castle said he tried to be somewhat physical with one of the NBA’s most physical players while also “playing smart” in an attempt to keep him off the foul line. But, ultimately, it was a team effort, Castle said.

“It’s not really a man-to-man thing,” Castle said. “I feel like it’s a team defense thing when you go out against him.”

Still, Castle led the charge while also contributing 19 points and 10 assists without a turnover for his seventh double-double of the season.

“We’ve asked a lot of that kid and people now expect a lot of that kid and that’s what you want when you become a really good player in this league,” Johnson said.
